In over four decades as athlete, coach, and fan, I have observed that nearly all runners that that this sport seriously are some of the strangest and most bitter people that I have ever encountered. Why is this? Is it because your dreams of glory and widespread respect never realized? That you couldn't attain the lofty goals that you set for yourself? Do you feel that your runner's build has cost you career and romantic opportunities?
Admittedly, I felt a bit slighted as a rail thin young man many years ago. But I still sense, despite having online communities like LRC, that most dedicated performance runners are a bizarre mix of inadequacy, longing, low self-esteem, and given to attacking anyone that seems happy or successful. A lot of runners come off as blatant attention seekers, know-it-alls, and anti-social introverts.
Is our sport dying largely because the general population has zero interest due to their experiences with serious runners?
