OK thanks for the answer. I believe you have solved the confusion I had.

This phrase is wildly overused, but...OK boomer.
("Old-fashioned" is old-fashioned.)
However, while I don't consider all-HS to have a superior status (nor, say, the women-only-race record in the women's marathon), and "not after graduation" is stupid (some states have graduation after the big national meets, some before, and sometimes it varies by year and meet), I do like running history, so let's see:
Pre's 2mi was already surpassed by Craig Virgin in 1973. While a lot of strong 3200m marks have come at Arcadia, German Fernandez's 8:34.40y from 2008 is the best in an all-HS race, was the record at the time, and is still second overall in the T&FN 3000/3200/2mi list after conversions.
Ryun's only sub-4 mile in an all-HS race was the 3:58.3 at the 1965 Kansas state meet, and I'm sure some old nobody complained about his teammate sacrificing his race to pace Ryun. Still, Gary Martin ran 3:57.98 at the Philadelphia Catholic League meet last year, which is sixth in the T&FN 1500/1600/1mi list. (Kessler has the best mark by some distance, but he gets relatively little hype, compared to what Webb got, because it was a 1500m.)
Granville actually holds the overall 800m record (unlike the occasional 2mi or more frequent 1mi, no one has run 880y for decades). Cade Flatt got within a tenth three times last year but didn't break it.
Thanks for the clarification. I forgot about Martin and Virgin breaking the all-HS mile and 2-mile marks.
