Lex Young Breaks High School 5000m Record

They saved the best race for last.

Nur falls Nur falls

Abdihamid Nur fell on the first lap, but was by far the best on the last lap, as he ran 13:05.17 to get the win and be the only athlete under the 13:07.00 World Championships qualifying standard. Nur, who made Team USA for Worlds last year and finished 11th, looks to be rounding into great form for USAs the first week in July.

Behind him, the next 7 guys all set outdoor 5000m PBs. The most historic performer of the night was back in 18th place, as Lex Young of Newbury Park High School ran 13:34.96 to break Connor Burns 3-week-old high school 5000m record of 13:37.30.

Young hugged Nur after the finish, as Nur was a teammate at Northern Arizona with Young’s older brother Nico.

Quick take: The amazing success by Newbury Park from the Young and Sahlman brothers continued. Nico started it off by winning the national high school XC championship in 2019. Colin Sahlman won the national XC title in 2021, his brother Aaron won in 2022, and now Lex has the high school 5000m record.
