“Fulton…used to run from Punta Gorda to North Port and back each day, and it paid off when he won two state championships in 1969 for Charlotte High and was awarded a scholarship to Texas Southern in Houston, a small NAIA school.”
My map app indicates Punta Gorda to North Port is 15-16 miles one way!!?! 👀
I really don't care of Wiley does whatever, because whatever she is doing is happening in the context of something so openly and clearly harmful and messed up.
It's super. Super weird and disturbing to exhault or promote performances that are happening in the shadow of abuse.
Scratch that, it says it’s 41 miles one way (Jerry Lindgren stuff.)
“As a 20yr-old, Fulton competed in the 1972 U.S. Olympic trials and, despite losing his shoe in the semifinals of the mile, he still reached the finals, though he failed to make the Olympic team. This motivated him to an almost absurd level of determination.
“Fulton would go to the track each morning at 5:30 a.m. and then run 48 laps at 5:00-5:30 pace, according to a 1973 story in Track and Field News. …At night he would return and run speed intervals.
“What Fulton did in the 1973 NAIA meet is considered by some distance running historians as one of the most remarkable individual performances in the history of the sport.
“In a span of just 51 hours between May 23-25, 1973, Fulton ran eight races — counting prelims and finals — that covered a total of 15 miles. In those races he won six and finished second twice, with little recovery time between races.”
“He ran the mile in 3:57.8, beating the bronze medalist of the 1972 Olympics in the process. It was the first sub four-minute mile ever run in the state of Arkansas and remains an NAIA record.”
“He never made an Olympic team; he ran professionally for a few years and then settled down in Houston to raise a family.”
Run the 18 yr old into the ground to win a team title that nobody cares about. Insane!! I wonder what her real coach Nick Johnson has to say about this? !?!?!
I know it looks insane, but considering how far ahead of the other NAIA women she is, this could be viewed as a training block where she also carries the team to the podium. Quite possible her only max efforts will come in the DMR if she’s playing catch-up. Itll be fun to watch for some of us. “Astro”and others like him will be unhinged the entire weekend. It will be glorious.
It will be fun, indeed. Just comes with a bit of skepticism. She’s obviously an incredibly brilliant talent— yet there are so many questions surrounding her situation. On the one hand, it will be exciting to see. On the other, it will simply raise more doubts regarding her current training situation and coaching.
As I mentioned a few posts up, this is a really bad idea. I’m glad Tuohy isn’t doing it.
Having said that, Tuohy could do it if she wanted to but she doesn’t want to. Henes wouldn’t let her do it anyway. If Tuohy did run NAIA, she would have no issues doing it. Conversely, if Wiley ran D1, she wouldn’t be doing this.
Again, good luck to her and I hope she doesn’t get injured.
