I want to see him in that euro 3000m with Fisher and Jakob. Shut it down after that.
Reminder: 2021 Olympics, 1500m, out with an injury. Shut it down. Indoor meets are glorified scrimmages. There's a reason stars rarely play, N.F.L. pre-season.
-Jakob ran a 1500 indoor WR last winter. -kerr ran 3:48 early last year -Lagat would win at this meet regularly -dibaba world run world records regularly indoors Nuguse just became a pro. We haven't seen his ceiling yet.
Woah baby. That last 400 was IMPRESSIVE. 54.23 last 440, with a 25.94 last 200. 3:47.38. American record He DESTROYED the field (and his teammates) in the process. Under Armour's Neil Gourley was 2nd in 3:49.46 as Hoare and (3:50.83 NR), Tanner (3:51.70 pb) and Garcia Romo (3:51.79 NR) consoled themselves with PBs or NRs in 3-4-5.
Also, "to the gills" means taking tons of pills and 'roids, bulging veins, no subcutaneous fat at all, crazy blood values, weird yellow eyeballs, massive cranium and jaw growth due to HGH, etc.
And honestly, if he were "to the gills" he would also get popped. People are getting busted all the time. Testing is real. Nuguse is passing all the tests.
You are a bitter cynic, but that is sadly somewhat understandable in our sport. However, you are also using the phrase "to the gills" wrong and that is not okay. Learn your doping terminology.
And as much as we hate to admit it, Rojo was right on this one. He called Nuguse making the Olympic team early in 2021 and others thought it was a crazy pick - in hindsight it seems obvious but was not at the time.
3:49-50 without the cheater shoes but still very good.
Do people still seriously think the shoes make a 3 second difference in a mile? Johnny Gregorek would have run 3:46 or Yomif Kejelcha 3:44 indoors with them? Why have the slew of 3:28-3:30 guys not taken the jump to El G territory and run 3:25/3:26 if they make 3 seconds? Somebody tell Jakob he is actually in worse shape than when he was 17 when he ran 3:30 in old spikes.
People overrate the spikes, particularly at 1,500. There isn't nearly the evidence that we see from the road shoes, which no doubt make a difference.
50 guys broke 4 at BU today.
The only people in denial of the shoes are current athletes, current coaches, and youngsters too naive to know better.
Doesn't mean these dudes aren't running fast. Nuguse is ridiculous right now.
To the people in this thread accusing Naguse of doping, just because you have to dope to run a 28 minute 5k at your local Turkey Trot doesn't mean everyone does. The worst dopers generally have little going for them outside sport and therefore want to maximize earnings over a short time frame (cough Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds, Alberto Salazar). From listening to Naguse it seems like his big goal running wise was to be an Olympian. He did that his senior year of college. Last year, he peaked for NCAAs then didn't run great after that. And now it seems like his goal is to just try to get as good as he can get, make a run at Paris and stick around no later than LA, then to be a dentist. News flash: a dentist makes more in a year (especially the oral surgeons) than 99% of track athletes make in their careers. Naguse has already been accepted to dental school. The only thing that could/would threaten that? Abusing prescription drugs (which almost all banned performance enhancing drugs are). It's too much risk, I'd be very surprised if he was doping. Dude has too much going for him outside of running. And that's why I think he's running great--no pressure.

No, only idiots that haven't actually ran in them think they are that much faster the instant you strap them on. They are maybe a half second faster per mile if anything for the elites but the real advantage is that they save the legs and you can training in them more often.

Nuguse is great, but the sport is a joke now with these shoes. Two guys running 7:33? Come on… it’s either great drugs or the shoes.
Chapa ran 7:37 as a college soph in 1978, having professionals with betters shoes and tracks run 7:33 is natural. But it doesn't make it a fraudulent time. I didn't hear you or anyone else complaining about any other spikes the last 40 years

Not to be greedy, but it seems Yared could easily be a medal threat in the 5000 too. There was nothing about his 3000 two weeks ago that would suggest it’s his top world class distance. He should attempt a 5000 soon, and if it looks good, be preparing for a 1500/5000 double at USAs. If Jakob can do it, why not Yared?
No. No. No.
Do 1 event only.
This guy has never even run at a Worlds and is injury prone. And you want him to pull a Clayton Murphy? NO NO NO.

So only the old jaded guys with no stake in the game are mad?
Anyone else remember when everyone was talking about how he was never going to beat Hocker again? Now he is supposed to be a medal theeats🤣 these last last 2 performances have been a big step up. Let's hope he keeps it rolling.

Well, for the most part my suggestion was tongue in cheek, but is he really injury prone? Until turning pro, Nuguse was a true STUDENT athlete, with a lot of emphasis on student. He was not getting adequate rest, literally running to class as much as running on the track. I’m not sure the pro Nuguse, living the pro lifestyle with pro resources, is going to be prone to injury. Anyway, wouldn’t you like to see how he fares in a fast 5000 this spring? I think he’d might run sub 12:50.

I think that all the best runners should purposely tank. Then the scumbags here will say they suck but they're drug free. Then they won't have any suspicions following them and they can live with their suckiness. Impeccable logic!

The mistake is to think that the 5,000 is the easier medal. Last year was pretty much a fluke as far as 3rd and 4th (though both are promising athletes who will likely run 12:50-55 or faster this year). Jacob Kiplimo was banged up and beat Krop/Kimeli in the Comm Games with crazy good splits. Cheptegei got hurt in the prelims and was a non-factor. The Ethiopians bombed after over-racing, and I suspect they will revert to their Olympics racing schedule where they thrived. Fisher stepped on the rail/tactically botched it. That 5,000 is going to be an absolute dogfight as the only aging guy might be Mo Ahmed. Katir might join the fray if he has more consistent training and I think it’s his preferred event. If Lobalu/Ndiku get allowed in, it’s even more challenging.
Meanwhile the 1500 is tougher to make the Final but Jakob is the only guy right now who Yared should definitely fear from a talent/skill set standpoint. Kerr and Wightman are formidable, if Tim returns to his old self that’s scary, and then Kipsang is a wild card. But 3:47/7:28 makes those guys feel beatable.

Exactly, Murphy got greedy trying to 800/1500 double and got injured when he could have easily won the 2017 800m world title.

Yes, all true, but Jakob emerged as the dominant force in the event because he’s so strong none of those you mention can truly drop him even when they are on point. Towards the end of a fast championship 5000, do you think the East Africans can close with Jakob? Well, not last year. Maybe, just maybe, Nuguse has the combined set of tools needed. Anyway, I’d like to see him run in a fast 5000 and see what happens. I guess the 3000 might be his limit and he’d fall off a lot at 5000, but he looked awfully strong running that 7:28.
Listen, I get this is all just conjecture and some hyperbole, but that’s the point of these threads. Nuguse is not going to try and double this year, and I’m sure that’s smart as Rojo has written. He can’t beat Jakob if he’s not on the team, but do you really think he wouldn’t make the USA team if he tried? Fisher, Woody, Yared. I don’t think Teare is strong or fast enough to beat him. Klecker? Chelimo? Abdi? No, good chance Yared could make the team if he wanted to try.
