He has officially filled the hole left by Rupp in the 5 and 10.
True. The surprising thing to me is that Rupp has a faster mile PR that's like 10 seconds faster than Fisher's and Fisher's PR jump over Rupp's PR in the 5K is almost equal greater than Fisher's PR jump over Rupp's PR in the 10K (11-12 seconds).
This is explained by Rupp having never quite performed up to what he was probably capable of in the 5K (probably low to mid 12:50s) and Fisher running mile races and 1500s less often for the last 7 or 8 years whereas Rupp ran them regularly well into his 5K peak.
But odd.
Honestly I thought Rupp was in 12:45 shape when looking at his 800, mile, 2 mile, and 10k PRs compared to other people on the 5k all time list. I could never figure out why he had so much trouble to break 13:00.
So I think when Grant runs 12:40, or when he has at least 2 medals, or if he breaks 26:30 I will consider him the best 5k/10k runner of all time in the US. Maybe that's unfair, but it is the supershoe and wavelight era, and there are a bunch of fast people now. Rupp ran in an era where there were not a lot of super fast races. I'm fairly certain that, barring catastrophe, Grant will medal in at least one event next year and will improve his times. He should have medaled in something this year, maybe both events with better positioning.
That's normal progress for an American born, doping for anyone else.
Grant is on no illegal drugs, period. The guy would not even consider dabbling in that area. Enough with the drugs. Anyone who PR's these days is on drugs? That's total BS dude.
That could very well be. But how do you know? Are you a family member or close friend? Even then you can't be totally sure.

Fisher improved his 5000 time by about 43 seconds in 2 or 3 years. Houlihan improved her 5000 time by 37 seconds in 2 or 3 years. See something similar?

Rupp had an altitude tent in his house in high school and college. And trained as a professional through college. Fisher studied engineering at Stanford.

Rupp’s coach is now banned from the sport.
What does that have to do with who is the best ever? They use the advantages they have at the time. I'm sure Fisher will continue to improve and easily be the best we've ever had but calling Fisher the best ever at a time when everyone is running super fast is a stretch. All Fisher has going for him so far are fast times, a couple good placings at DL meets, and making some OG/WC finals and not getting embarrassed. He's like a modern day Bob Kennedy so far. It looks like that is soon to change, but give it another year. Also, he has 1 national title so far. How many did Kennedy have? How many did Rupp have?
I think next year Grant runs 12:42 or better and medals. Then he will look like the clear best ever.
And....[say it....say it]...#1 Caucasian all time. [ only E. Africans in front of him].
And since according to all the "Patriots" here on let'srun allllllllll the top Africans are dirty no good cheaters, does that make him the #1 clean runner off all time??? [ gasp]
I like the white dude in the midst of all those cheating Africans.
Kara doesn't sound even the slightest bit excited while commentating. At the bell lap she should have been on her feet screaming like the dudes in the 2010 Solinsky video. She also incorrectly stated it was Fisher's first non-time-trial record, overlooking the recent 3000.
I agree. Not a good call. When she first came on to the scene, everyone loved her. Now when I listen I have the same reaction tha tI do with every announcer, I can't help myself but think, "I could do better." I think the same thing in virtually every sport - NFL as well. So Kara shouldn't take that the wrong way. ;)
But she always tells us how they look and their form. I don't care about that. Maybe NBC told her that's what the average viewer likes. Ok i do like that a little, but mainly I like passion from the color person, excitement and stats to put it in perspective. So much of the rest of it is nonsense - he needs to do this, that, etc. As Jakob said, It's not like a runner ever purposely thinks, 'I'm going to fall off here' or not push the pace - they just can't do it.
Do the tv networks have research that says pepole don't like passion? It seems like I hardly every see Dick Vitale on basketball broadcasts for example.
But as for this call. She took a needless potshot about him only running fast in time trials. How he needs to to do it in a real race. Does she not realize that doing it with wavelight and perfect pacing for 4900 meters is easier than in a time trial?
Like how in the hell wasn't this a time trial. From the get go, it was single file. They have multiple pacers and wave light. The only difference was it was a DL and the # of competitors. When Grant ran his 10k AR, he raced the hell out of Ahmed at the end.

If the was to run 12:42 next year, the only guys with faster PRs would be Cheptegi, Bekele, Haile and Komen. Quite a group to be associated with.
Do you realize how many GREAT guys there in the world that also don't have medals.
Guess how many guys have run 12:50 or faster in the last 2 years?
11
Guys who have run 12:50 or faster in last 2 years but hasn't medalled in 5 or 10k Nicholas Kimeli - no medals Berihu Aregawi - no medals Hagos Gebrhiwet - (last medal came in 2016) Grant Fisher
Guys who have run 12:50 or faster in last 2 years but have medalled in 5 or 10k during last 2 years Jacob Krop - Jakob Ingebrigtsen Mo Katir - Mo Ahmed - Joshua Cheptegei Jacob Kiplimo - Selemon Barega -
Look at that bottom list. Do you really think Fisher is better than any of those 7 guys on the whole? It's super competitive.
