I have one question for you guys! I have read multiple times that africans were killing the sport, so do you think this record would be possible without the africans pacing it or pushing it? The hatred needs to stop now!
Fisher stagnated in college, probably due to his schoolwork. But he was an established major talent, as evidenced by his sub-4 mile on low mileage and soccer and that Pac-12 champs in which he closed in 51 or 52, in addition to other competitive performances. The one year 18 second drop was totally unsurprising. That was his first full year as a pro after graduating Stanford in 2019. He had swapped out slower college training partners for a group of low 13 and sub 13 guys doing high #'s of reps. Then when the strength work had been absorbed, he came back a lot stronger and he's at his peak now at 25. Enjoy it while it lasts. There's no telling whether he holds at this level or even a bit higher for a month, a year, or five to ten years. I hope he has a shot at the 12:40s. That might require him to lead, so I hope he does that if it's necessary and gains some confidence to stick his neck out to lead next year. Good to see BTC actually running a major competition other than US, World, or Olympics.
Fisher's coach at Stanford didn't know what he was doing, that's why Fisher didn't perform up to his ability in college.
Pretty much ran the same time every year for 4 years until the shoes came out then jumped on a 18 second pr which seems...reasonable. If he runs 12:45 he will have improved his time by 45 seconds since 2019 after not improving at all from 2016-19.
Very limited thought went into the above post.
Grant Fisher, first had a high school coach then had a university coach both of which didn’t push him because they realized the longer term potential in the athlete - thank goodness for fans now.
Fisher took a very strenuous degree program (electrical engineering) at Stanford.
As a professional it took him over a year to adapt to strenuous training and his results started coming a year ago to the point where he is now.
It is silly to think shoes would have a major impact.
Fisher is one of the very rare US high school standouts that continued do do well through college and into his professional to the point of being in the conversation of winning medals and Diamond League in men’s distance events.
That… comes from smart coaching along the way for the long term, having incredible talent and tenacity, the desire to sacrifice a lot of what we take for granted, train hard day in and day out all the while being intelligent through the process of training and racing.
He has had an incredible season and it is my hope he can stretch his talents a little more this year to get the American Record in the 5,000m tomorrow in Brussels.
Yes, very limited thought. How would the shoes exactly turn him from national class to a world beater medal contender when everyone else has the same shoes?
