If Jibb is healthy very low. If not, pretty legitimate
Fairport would need to enter first in order to have a chance to qualify.... there are a number of teams capable of qualifying who have not entered.....after Wed late fees kick in...it'd be a shame if a potential team chose not to attempt...has happened before.
It’s also happening this year….#2 team in the country Jesuit LA doing RunningLane instead of Nike. They just had their state meet today where they perfect scored, and NXR would be this weekend for them
Fairport is looking to be the favorite in NY next year though
After the 2018 season ended, Xavier was looking to be favorites for second at NXR behind FM.
But based on track times, it looked like Burnt Hills was gonna likely get second even after losing Berg/Brennan/Hunziker/Gilooley, and in the end they still qualified in 2019 after some new guys stepped up.
But Xavier didn’t even give them a run for their money at NXR. They rather finished in the middle of the pack
Bethlehem girls qualified for NTN back in 2004, the first year it was held, and finished 13th. They were 3rd at Feds that year behind Saratoga (who went on to dominate NTN) and only 3 points behind Shen for 2nd after beating them at Suburbans and Sectionals so I suppose that’s why they got the nod.
I had totally forgotten about that. Props.
Cns girls definitely won’t be making it to NXN.
Without Boyle NXN is definitely a no. She committed to Penn State though
I did a little light research on something that's been showing up all season. Looked at three consecutive recent years that I know to have been a very good era for NY high school boys cross country, and counted the total number of athletes with a speed rating over 170 at the state meet.
In 2013 there were 92. In 2014 there were 86. In 2015, there were 76. And in 2022, there were 43. In '14, there were more 170+ sr's in Class A alone than there were in the entire meet this year.
Unpacking the "whys" of that could make for an interesting thread all on it's own. But the relevant takeaway for the purpose of this thread is, it's a pretty good bet that this is going to be a "We're just happy to be here" year for NY Boys teams at NXN.
In 2019 it was Kamiakin’s and Burnt Hills’ goal to get top 10 at NXN.
If Metacarpa was healthy BH would have beaten FM at NXR
Kamiakin underperformed and Burnt Hills I think could have done a little better with metacarpa healthy. But they kind of finished where they were expected to. Cause it was supposed to be a barn burner behind fm at NXR
In both 2013 and 2014, NY sent 3 boys teams to NXN. In 2013, there were 3 additional teams that were close to the at-large qualifier at NXR; in 2014 all three qualifying teams finished in the top 8 at NXN. Suffice it to sat that we're not expecting that this year.
Look what happened when Burnt Hills did not get an at-large in 2017
But there was no necessity of complaining about that snub. Burnt Hills had 1 senior that year. The year after that they made it of course
And Desert Vista (got the second at-large bid from SW) had way more seniors and placed highly at NXN 2017
Burnt Hills ran so poorly at NXR that year, there was no way they were getting an at-large bid. Most of the team was sick, Metacarpa was (as usual) injured... compare their performance to what they ran the prior week at Feds. Seniors vs Juniors had nothing to do with it.
Yeah and there were regions much stronger than NY that year.
All teams that were selected as an large that year were better than Burnt Hills.
Timpanogos and Green Hope had disappointing performances at NXN though
This doesn’t bode well for their chances of ever pinching at an NXN spot. NY isn’t strong but there is always lots of competition for the NXN spots on the team side. Many teams always want those spots
Metacarpa injured in 2019 and the team still made NXN with losing their 1-4 that’s crazy
Nationals was definitely when the bulk of that burnt hills squad peaked as runners. Allison never replicated his sophomore year success until outdoor of his senior year, Metacarpa never raced for his team again, Board Ubriaco and Marchant all stagnated in college running, Grock didn't run after his senior year XC and Rounds fell off after his junior year xc season. At the very least it seems Allison is making a comeback at stony brook.
Grock didn’t even run track his junior and senior year. He was probably more passionate about things
This is what he was onto junior year
Emma Coburn to miss Olympic Trials after breaking ankle in Suzhou
