Don't worry Shadow Lurker has never been right...and rumor mill is his evil twin
While I do admit to being mildly entertained by the SL. I'm not sure that makes me evil.
I'm just a former Bruin who has an interest in what happens with that program. I've heard lots of rumors... most we've already seen here but a couple that haven't been mentioned.
I've got nothing against anyone who has been mentioned for the job but I don't think it's an easy position to take over. Lots of potential but lots of pressure too.

The job is terrible. Think of it in this context- They are planning on giving no money to distances, MAYBE only some middle distance. that means they are 100% not caring about cross country and only about Track. Fine.... I guess if the rumors above are true about wanting an MD minded coach.... but this means that a Power 2 school is going to go the same route as Arizona, USC, Arizona State, and recently Cal when it comes to it's efforts in Cross Country. So, back to my point, it's terrible... why? because who ever takes the job will flounder and be wasting his or her time recruiting kids that other teams with a focus on XC will easily win in a recruiting battle. Then, at the starting line, hoping you don't take last at conference is the new goal and hoping at regionals you can sneak by with only taking 2-3 runners (like Arizona and AZ state) to not be scored as a team because you'll be laughed at when you place 30th. Also, a P2 job will require a bigger name and let's be honest, with the above support they aren't gonna get a big name unless it's a big fringe name- hence the "BIGGEST NAME IN HIGH SCHOOL" UCLA also paid Devin peanuts (you can find it online at transparent california for all state employees). Zero chance you get a big name, who will work for peanuts, under a director who is rumored to be on the hot seat, with zero scholarship money for distances.... yea no thanks. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see more XC kids from UCLA entering the portal soon with the compete disregard the Director has given to XC. The job is terrible.

SO? What's wrong with focusing on middle distances and playing to your climate? Not all 800-1500 runners are enamored with XC and many would find it great to not have to focus on racing the longer fall distances.
The fact is that UCLA is one of the top ranked academic institutions in the world. That is a card that can be played to attract those who want that type of a prestigious degree. In terms of no money for distance scholarships...that's incorrect. I have an athlete going there this fall on scholarship.

You make some good points.
It's certainly a tough job financially. If you combine Devin & Austin's salaries it's still not much. Which is why I said earlier that a distance assistant would like be volunteer. It's tough to live on 40k in LA ... unless you have a 2nd job.
Of course, historically, UCLA has been track first and XC 2nd. It's a tough balance to hit. The head track coach gets paid to win track meets. In the glory years in track for ucla in the 70s- 80s most of the distance runners were non-scholarship,,,... most not all.

Nothing wrong with focusing on middle distance... it's an HC decision.
That said, climate not being conducive to XC is a silly excuse. Climate.... in LA ... bad for distance running? Not buying it.
And, yes, you are right there are some on scholarship there.
