The #2 and #4 steeplechasers from Worlds didn't run the Ethiopian Trials. If Ethiopia holds true to it word and keeps its team as the top 3 from today's Trials, then a men's steeple medal just got a lot easier. In fact, non of the 3 sub-8:10 Ethiopians from 2019 ran today.
I think the proper answer though is Holihan or Muir. With Tsegay opting for the 5000 today, it means that two of world's top 3 1500 runners are apparently not going to run the 1500 with her and Hassan in other events. So that means the 5th best 1500 runner will win a medal.
It's a shame the Ethiopians apparently aren't allowing doubles and it's a shame the Olympic schedule isn't set up to make the doubles more doable.
Can you imagine a women's 1500 with Tsegay, Hassan and Kipyegon all in peak form? That might be the greatest women's race EVER. Or how about a 5000 with Gidey, Hassan and Tsegay?
