If he started doing more specialized track training this week, what could he do at the Trials?

He would have to close in 55 in a fast race to win the trials in the 10,000, and maybe even faster in the 5000. I think we can safely say that's beyond him at this point. He's getting old and he hasn't done any track races for a long time.

At the marathon trials he sat on his ass at the starting line, like Larry Bird, wondering "Who's 2nd?"
Only a fool would bet against him.

Yeah but he was racing relatively mediocre marathon runners. Abdi is not making the U.S. Olympic Team at 10000m or below in any kind of shoes. Of course Galen might make the U.S. team at 10000m but he would not likely win the Trials.

Lose.
I think Rupp could still go sub-27 with the right training. Who else in the USA can do that?
He'd win the 10k trials but has a much better shot in the Oly marathon than he does in the 10k, so he won't bother with the 10k.

It has been 7 years since Galen broke 27 minutes. He is not even in the top 3 of U.S. runners who would have a chance at breaking 27.
In the 5k, I don't think so. In the 10k...It would not surprise me.
On a similar note...with the trials at the new stadium, I think he should get a qualifying time and run the 10k.
10000 - maybe, but probably not.
5000 - hells to the no.
in 2017th in a slow/hot 10k he got well out-kicked to a 5th place, but had won it [nationals] the 8 straight prior years
bad result/bad showing? not sure if he's run a 10k in competition since this?
I figured he has an outside shot at 3rd/4th in any given year tho, even now---but I'm not sure he can do anything but take it out honestly unlike before where he could win in the final turn or 2 and sit on the field
I remember the 4x(6X400m) @ 60-62 that Mike Smith had Rupp do before the marathon trials to rebuild his economy. He is way fitter now and totally rebuilt from the surgery. He could definitely make the trials 10k team and possibly even win it if the race was fast and he played to his strengths as a marathoner. He should focus on the marathon in Tokyo though.

There is no way in hell that he would beat Lomong, fast or slow race.

If Rupp is just 90% of his former self in the 10000 and in the new super spikes, he'd probably run a 10-15 second PB in the 10000 if he did a 10000 training cycle. I think if he went out balls to the walls and made it a 26:30 race to win it, he would win it.

I am not going to insult you. You really do not grasp what is happening here. It is OK. Galen likely cannot even run 13:15 so there is no chance he can double it. Galen at his absolute best struggled when running 13:00 5000m pace.

But ran a 26:44 10k, which is equivalent to a 12:49 5k. So clearly more of a strength runner. With his the past few years of him doing marathon training has only improved his strength that much more. Plus the super spikes. Come on, Rupp if he wanted to could crush it this year in the 10000 trials.
No Galen could not crush it this year in the 10000m Trials UNLESS you mean by crushing it possibly making the Olympic Team. You talk about 26:30. Galen cannot run half of that. Another issue you might not be grasping is that Galen does not like to lead races. There are no pacemakers at the Trials. Galen is no longer a danger to out kick the top U.S. runners so he might need to break away in the last 2000m if he wants to win. Galen probably cannot do that. I am not sure what you think these spikes are worth but they do not transform a 27:20 runner into a 26:30 runner. Something else might do that but not the super spikes.

He most certainly would not be able to do any of those things.

He ran the 10K in the trials in 2017 and didn't make the team. Why do you think he would make it now? He might but it's not a given at all.
Eh in 2017 he was clearly training for the thon and was 2 months out from Boston.
Give him 5 months training for the 10,000 and I do think he has a good shot at winning. Lomong would be touch though. Fisher and Kincaid too.
