To be fair, Florida's government has made it pretty clear that they care more about money than human lives. This move is not surprising to me.

All just posturing by Gov. DeSantis. The IOC would never move it to the epicenter of the pandemic. Just the Gov trying to look good to the tourism industry.
You are confused with the new Federal administration.
WeJo has that boomer mentality of total submission to and belief of authority. The CFO of Florida doesn't have the authority to say this. He is posturing for political reasons.
Absolute baby-brain listening to anything that will confirm his desired for a 2021 Olympics. Freaking Q-anon or Anti-vax psychology--he believes it because it supports his philosophy/desires/worldview.

Of course, that goal motivates EVERY decision the governor makes.
Serious question, though, insofar as this is a serious thread: what would the track & field venue be if Florida did host the Olympics?
The Disney sports complex is nice, but hardly "olympian."

Florida ranks 26th in deaths per capita, with roughly half the death rate of NY, NJ, and MA. Despite having more old people and tons of international travel. If you read something other than NYT and CNN you would know that they have managed the pandemic and vaccine rollout better than most states. Combine vaccinations with seasonal patterns and we'll be looking at close to zero deaths by summer.
I agree.
Unfortunately, certain countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Morocco simply wont be able to vaccinate all of their Olympic teams in sufficient time.
Let's just have a Games featuring countries with advanced vaccination programmes and testing regimens. I'm thinking of GB, Australia, NZ, Norway, and one or two others. It would be a safe Games and a classic Games.
More people will die due to the summer heat in florida at this olympics than covid, I really hope it goes somewhere worth competing in.

Why vaccinate? These athletes are the healthiest people on the planet, maybe except the weightlifters. Either way, I’m sure they would all take the risk to be in the games.
They can quarantine after the games.

There were already 9 named storms by the end of July last year.
"Named storms", sure. Serious hurricanes worthy of boarding up buildings that were a mile or more inland....nope. Not happening in July.
During a non-pandemic year, you could roll the dice on having to evacuate an entire OG. But during a pandemic, taking that risk is completely reckless as it would completely bust any effort to bubble the games and expose millions.
There is zero chance you'd have to evacuate central FL in July. Zero. Areas around the coast like Miami, Key West, Tampa...there's a slight, slight possibility. Orlando: zero chance in July.

Well, Florida is hardly the "epicenter of the pandemic".
Plus, the US is in good position to achieve herd immunity long, long before most of the rest of the developed world due to the high # of natural infections & vaccinations. US currently has more than 1 out f every 3 people vaccinated on the planet right now. And we all know about case #s.....

Nah, Disney has that covered.

A marathon during summer in Florida could have similar conditions to Doha.
Tallahassee has an average low temperature of 72 F during July and August. The marathon could start at sunrise. I am assuming that the Olympics will be held all over Florida. It would be appropriate for the capitol city to host the marquee event.
Tokyo has average low of 69 F in July, 71 F in August. Not much difference.

It would be awesome for Florida and the US if this comes to fruition.
Yeah it would. Florida has already administered dose 1 of the covid vaccine to 7.3% of the population, and by summer a majority could be vaccinated at this rate. No reason to think the Games couldn't be done safely.
Most of those involved in Big Pharma vaccine trials were relatively healthy 20 to 60 year olds. Historically, those over age 75 do not do well with vaccines. This is all one huge experiment. Florida state government is run by a collection of flat earth Q-Anon supporters who do not know their head from their ... . Summer Olympics, 2021 in Florida is an awful idea.

If vaccines don't work then what's your solution? Lockdown forever?
It will never happen but it would be cool to see.
The United States pulls off hosting an olympics with only six months notice, after dealing with the worst pandemic in 100 years (and being the epicenter of that pandemic in terms of cases and death) and after going through a very traumatic and tense election cycle.
It would be such a power move & I think would make many proud to be American again.
But, alas, there is too much red tape, people are still too afraid of COVID and the IOC is more likely to just cancel the damn thing. But man, it would be cool to see if we could pull it off.
My guess is that the rumors about the former Prime Minister's health created an atmosphere of instability at the highest levels of the Japanese government. The former PM resigned in Sep 2020.
So Florida's death toll is 0.119% of the total population. And that's somehow preposterous, even when you consider the number of retirees who are there and that 80% of Covid deaths have occurred in the 80+ population? The fear-mongering is growing tiresome.
Per the CDC, excess mortality in the US is
365,918-492,450
Read, repeat, weep a little and repent from moron conspiracy theories about COVID being a hoax.
