Florida has offered to host the Olympics this year. This isn't BS. The CFO of the state sent a letter to Thomas Bach, the head of the IOC, saying there still is time to move to the Olympics to Florida.
For those of us who want to have an Olympics I think this can only help the Olympics being held this year.
Before I wrote my editorial that we published today advocating for the Olympics to be held this year, I discussed with a few people "Could you move them somewhere else as a last resort?" I said "what about Florida and Disney" as there are 30,000 hotel rooms just at the Disney property and they have a lot of sports facilities. The consensus was it wasn't feasible.
Now it looks like I'm not the only person who thinks Florida could be an emergency host. And if the state gets behind the big it isn't just a pipe dream.
Having said that I don't want to see the Olympics moved from Tokyo but I think this will put some pressure on Tokyo to come up with a plan for the Olympics. Florida has made the decision as a state to live with the virus so it is willing to take on more risk and tourists. But a little external pressure and competition can I think only prompt Tokyo to think of ways it can host the Games instead of not host them. The Japanese people might start thinking of why they would want to hold as safe a Games as possible instead of not holding them. This ultimately comes down to public perception and public will.
I'm sure some people might say "oh the arrogant Americans with all their covid deaths shouldn't offer to host the Games." I can see how that sentiment might exist, but I still don't think this in anyway hurts the chances of their being a Games this year. Competition generally is a good thing.
Like the Rose Bowl said it wouldn't have fans this year and next thing you knew it was moved to Texas and was a success.
I still hope the Games are in Tokyo.
