Hopefully helps LRC haters realize that you can get big money as a 9:30 kid in Division I (like I did) when the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS are signing 9:12 and 9:17 guys.
Agreed. People forget that the NCAA is bigger then just power 5 schools. You can get big money from other D1 schools and still have great education and racing opportunities. High schoolers take note.
Even the 8:59 probably didn’t get money. These are called recruited walk ons. They are guaranteed a lot on the team, but no scholarship money.

Same here. Actually if the kid is smart enough plenty of small D1 schools can offer damn close to full rides, especially if they stay in-state.
These kids are going to NAU to be the best runners they can be. Mentioning that they could’ve gone to lesser running schools and get money serves no purpose.
A coach can only recruit and just because he recruits, doesn't mean he will get the kid. Kids (and parents), make their decisions for their own reasons, not because a particular coach recruits them. You can't win em all.

They put 7 scholarships into distance. Sorry to burst your bubble.
NAU is of course fully-funded and even more importantly, it’s a very easy school to get into and there is a ton of other aid available. So like a lot of program claiming to have a well rounded track program, NAU probably has a total of 15 scholarships inside invested in distance. Brody Hasty is most assuredly not paying a penny, nor anyone ahead of him, probably the 5 guys ranked behind him, and even a couple guys who didn’t pan out at all there.

Than = a method of comparison
Then = a moment in time
Thanks for all of you knowledge? The NCAA maximum is 12.6. NAU has other event groups that eat up some scholarships and they are not fully funded which makes none of what you said accurate.

Ugh, people are talking about things they know nothing about...
No one other than the coaches know for certain, but NAU is very likely full funded (12.6) and most of the Big Sky is comparatively well funded when compared to other FCS conferences.
I can definitively say they do not have 15 distance scholarships. They do likely have a number of athletes who are paying nothing (probably not 15), as many of there runners are probably of large athletic scholarships complemented by academic aid.
Also, as someone else said, they are not entirely distance. Their distance squad is nationally relevant but they send plenty of other athletes to the first round and regularly compete for Big Sky track titles. Safe to say they are much more invested in distance than many schools but also safe to assume they have track athletes on scholarship as well. Only the coaches have any idea as to what the scholarship ration of distant : everyone else is on that team.
All of the referenced committed athletes are likely receiving some sort of aid--also likely that none are receiving full athletic scholarships.
I don't remember the last time NAU was considered to have the "best" recruiting class in the country.
BUT...look at what mike smith does with his guys. They PRODUCE!
Mike knows how to get the right guys for him. Its why they are so good each year. Case in point, did anyone look at the osu results? They had a freshmen kid Santiago prosser who beat Ryan Schoppe and the freshmen from Newbury park. Hes a random kid from Alaska.
It is not a "probably not". It is a definitely not since the NCAA cap is 12.6.
Cool to see former Michigan great John Scherer 's (NCAA 10k Champ) kid, Jack, on that list! I wonder why Sully couldn't snag him...
Abdihamid Nur is listed as a sophomore at NAU but he graduated high school in 2017.
Anyone know how many years of eligibility he has left after this season?
He was academically ineligible fall of ‘18. He probably redshirted his freshman year (‘17) and he competed last year. This year does not count for eligibility (at least the fall) so presumably 3 more yrs at least in xc.
$40K as opposed to $70k. 22 ACT as opposed to 33.
I fully know the NCAA athletic limit is 12.6. What I am saying is they probably use 8-9 of those towards distance and then their kids are given a lot of academic/need aid to fill in to make them on full scholarship. The best coaches in the country know to ask this when interviewing and/or set out to make sure they understand this "stacking" can be of great benefit.
Then why even say it when it is the same at every school except the Ivies? NAU is no different. If anything, the runners who go there are probably academically inferior so they are not receiving a great deal of academic aid. As a reminder to everyone, athletes can't get non-athletic scholarships that other equivalent students do not get. The NCAA tracks this closely which almost puts athletes in a less competitive situation because schools are shy about even taking a small risk.
