So one of my teammates (I'll say M) is CONVINCED he's a star recruit for some reason or another, and is trying to make the team for a local D2 program in my area. Now, that wouldn't be an issue except his times are hella average (he's been good enough to be on our state teamx4 years as our #7) and he seems to think him being on the state team means he is an INDIVIDUAL state caliber athlete. We have another guy on our team who is actually being recruited by the D2 team, and regularly eats M alive. However, M instead crap talks to our runner, belittles them, and tries every which way to somehow make up for the fact he is 30 seconds slower than him on a GOOD day. I have to admit, especially with championship season coming up, it's getting a little hard to focus with M constantly starting stuff on the team.
I am friends with M and want to be there for him, but there is no way he'd even make the team, and I know for a fact the coach (a family friend) is not even slightly interested. Do i break him the truth and hurt him? at the end of the day, I want him to believe in himself but not at the expense of our team.
