Outdoor HS record 1k is next. February 28 on his home track.
They are in no big rush to move him to the mile or 1600. His focus this year is to try and win the UIL 6A 400 and 800. Then see what's up. Good interview with his coach on MS from the Texas Coaches Convention.
A 16 year old running 1:46 indoors......why even think he will end up moving up in distance?
Several years ago, someone sent me a clip of him either in an age group or middle school race where he ran low 1:50 something looking very raw. I recall thinking he was tall for his age, but not over developed or trained which are key things to consider when accessing potential. I think he is the future of the 800, which is something I posted on LR a couple years ago.

By the way, he beat NCAA 800m champ Shane Cohen
Nobody said he should move up. I simply asked how close he might be to breaking 4. It is like if someone asked whether he could run XX for 400m. It wouldn’t mean they were suggesting he should move down in distance.

I was responding to "Weak Runner".
I knew that. He didn’t suggest that the kid move up. So your post was unwarranted.

He raised the possibility.

Unless you have a different interpretation of "Then see what's up". Maybe a switch to tennis?
Well I didn’t interpret it as meaning anything other than assessing the situation. Like you could say you were going to go for a walk, eat dinner and then see what’s up. That could mean multiple things.
I didn't raise the possibility. I was answering why he probably won't make a run at the sub-4 mile just yet. He is very focused on the 4/8 and the single 1k race. That's all.

You don't raise it and then comment on a 4 minute mile!

Good to hear that Lutkenhaus is taking a shot at 1000m.
Assuming there is no one there to drag him thru 700m, will be difficult to run extremely fast. Now, if he has gets the benefit of a pace setter, I imagine that 2:22.0 is very reachable.

400/800 is gonna be TOUGH. Wish him the best. Jonathan Simms is back, Then you have Elijah Ferguson who's already run 46.38 indoors, and then Heath Grant who is basically just a slower Cooper. He's gonna need to run 45.x to win the 400, probably.
