Grant Fisher EDGES Cole Hocker and BREAKS WORLD RECORD In Millrose 3000
Grant Fisher - Cole Hocker Duel More Than Lives Up To The Hype. This Race Was One Of The Greatest In Us History
By Robert JohnsonThe 3000m race between Grant Fisher and Cole Hocker at Millrose more than lived up the hype – incredible duel between two all-time US greats, American record, world record and also the #2 time in world history.
After near-perfect rabbiting for 1800 meters (4:28.19 for Fisher), everyone assumed it was time for the Olympic 5000 and 10,000 medallist Grant Fisher to drop the Olympic 1500 champ Cole Hocker. And despite running three sub-30s (29.82, 29.82, 29.54), Fisher was unable to drop Hocker. And shockingly with three laps to go, Hocker went to the lead.
On the NBC broadcast, Kara Goucher said this was about Cole Hocker making a “statement,” but that’s not what entered my mind as I thought, “He must want the world record. Why else would he risk leading when the American record (7:28.23) seems like a foregone conclusion?’
Hocker picked it up – 29.08, 28.86 – but Fisher wasn’t dropped. At the bell (6:55.25), Yared Nuguse‘s indoor American record of 7:28.23 had clearly less than 30 seconds of life left and Lamecha Girma‘s 7:23.81 indoor world record was battling for survival.
The last lap was epic. Fisher fought back and took the lead coming off the final turn and got the win in a world record time of 7:22.91, that carried with it a $25,000 WR bonus, as Hocker settled for a nice consolation prize of the #2 time in history at 7:23.14.
