Men's Indoor 3000 World Record Under Threat Saturday @ Millrose

I don't get why people seem to think it's impossible for Hocker to tire himself out hanging with Grant Fisher, and have nothing left for a kick.

If they're both feeling good with a lap to go, well, we all know Hocker is a beast. But against Grant, Hocker being in striking distance may mean he is up against his limits in a way we haven't often seen him (including in his 3:27 race). It's not going to be easy, it depends on factors we don't know (where these guys are in their buildups, how strong they are exactly), but I still think it is possible for Grant to run the kick out of him.

One alternative is that Hocker knows his body well enough and holds back, and is a few seconds back from Grant.

And yes, another alternative is that Hocker is actually strong enough to hold onto Grant and kick from there. Where I disagree is that I don't think this is the only possibility for what's going on, if we see them together near the end.

behind Grant Fisher, because he's too far back.

That was one of the two Big Reveals from today's Millrose presser.

With the 3000 field being paced through 2000 @ 5:00 = 30/lap = 7:30, excellent prospect for both Cole & Grant to wind it up over the final five laps, dropping into the 29s then hopefully into the 28s on the last one. That would easily get them at/under 7:28 for a new AR and possibly approach 7:25.

But into the 7:23s for a new WR? Unfortunately, now have to admit that's likely unobtainable.

Do like what Cole had to say regarding his fitness. Feeling terrific and in the best shape of his life for this point in the season. Not looking at Saturday's race as a season-opening rust-buster. Believes he is quite capable of running sub-7:30. Sounded very confident. Have to also admit this race is now a toss-up -- can't say anymore that Grant is the pre-race favorite. Should make for exciting tv viewing.

Other Big Reveal was Cole racing the 5000 @ BU DMR Challenge/Last Chance Meet on Feb. 21st -- a week after Grant runs his all-out 5000 @ BU Valentine Invite on Feb 15th. Cole just wants his 13:01 Tokyo Q. Confirmed he will do the 1500/5000 double @ USAs this summer, intent on making both teams.

Grant of course is the fav, and Hocker within 2 seconds at the finish will move him forward to his goal to get down to 1250 flat, and hone the aerobic strength to hang with Jacob all the way, and do his kick thing.

Do you mean 2:19 for the closing 1000m? If so, this isn´t necessary at all. If they run the first 2000m in conservative 5.00 thay "only" have to go 2:23 in the last 1000m. That is more than 57 per 400m pace.

Jakob ran 4:55 and 2:22 in his WR race.

Yes but Jakob is ridiculously good at the 3K and ripping off negative splits at a high speed. I think these guys could hit 2:23-5 to be clear. Faster? I’d love to see it but don’t know

Everyone knows Jakob will put this record out of reach, as he did the outdoor record, when he bothers to run one.

Hocker has a good shot. I think there was a poll here, were the odds 2 to 1 Grant vs Hocker?

Hocker appears to be in very good shape, as is Grant. His 333 in a sub optimal 15 race indicates he's sharp.

If they have a pacer to 2k at 5 min, which I doubt, then it will take 58 second laps to kill him off, that is maybe.

The 15 is insane right now. By far the best senior and junior crop ever by wide margin.

While early this 3k will be tell tale. Of course you don't over do your prep work here which will be forgotten the second you lose or get injured.

Firstly you insulted my intelligence by not first questioning how a 10k athlete like Grant Fisher can suddenly improve 1 second in the 1500m at a much older age than he used to be and on a shorter indoor track with dizzying circles. Then having said all these which you should have you couldn’t progress any further to ask us how much faster he would run in 2025 in the 3k because you haven’t resolved the gaps and issues identified above. You would then end the post by asking ‘do you think he is doping because he is making such strange leaps?’.

I admit like any tool out there that either hocker or fisher would win the race but since I’m not an ordinary tool I also wish to admit that I hope to end the doping faux that is hocker and fisher.

Should not have doubted my initial impression mentioned in an earlier post: based upon his 3:33.99/1500 @ NBIGP, Grant had reached a level of fitness well beyond anything he's achieved before.

All credit to Cole for trying to do what Kerr did last year, surprisingly taking the lead with 600 to go and attempting to run Grant's leg out from under him.

All credit to Grant for not being fazed -- and having the confidence & speed necessary to stay with the surge then still have a kick at the end.

Also, all credit to Ky Robinson for having the guts to stay with Grant & Cole through 2200 meters. Still closed well with a 6+ second pr.

Great run from Dylan Jacobs as well and a pr for Ollie Hoare.

Excellent openers for the OAC boys.
