Yes, if I were a marathon runner, I'd pull out. It could be a death march. There are only so many marathons a person can do, why waste the effort on day/track where you are a lock to record a terrible time and guaranteed to be miserable much of the race.

There are plenty of races to choose from.

Now if you are getting appearance money, of course that is different.

Or you can do what I'm doing, use it as a final long run before Philly. That's the way to approach this situation.

I suppose thats the next best option.

Or you could not be a wimp and just race. 20 mph wind is tough, but not the end of the world. ya, you might not pr, doesn't mean you can't still run a good race

I can't believe people would actually defer the race. If you want to run a PR, you probably shouldn't have targeted the NY marathon to begin with. You should've run Chicago, Berlin or Philly or one of the other faster fall marathons. You do NY to experience a great race and compete on a historic course.

Also, doing Philly at this point doesn't make sense for most people. You've already done a 2 - 3 week taper and Philly is 3 weeks away. You'll likely lose a good bit of fitness. Also, the weather may not be better in 3 weeks in Philly than it will be this weekend.

I'm as annoyed an anyone about the expected winds but I wouldn't dream of differing the race.

It will only be really bad on bridges. Probably going to cost the winner 1 to 2%. I'd say the men's winner will be in the 2:07 to 2:08 range.

The coldest NYC Marathon was in 1995, with 18 degree wind chills. The have been more problems over the years with heat rather than cold.

Heavy snow is forecast for parts of New England. Let's hope it doesn't spread south.

What a bunch of puszies on this thread, indicative of the mentality that all marathons are becoming time trials and fun runs, not races.

Instead of nutting up and being able to say you ran NY in the toughest conditions, you've all already given up.

It's really a shame. The cool thing about marathons is you don't know what's going to happen and the good runners adapt, and run their best race.

My last Boston was the year of the Nor Easter and sure, I didn't PR but it was a tough, great experience that I talk about with pride, instead of whining that the weather prevented me from a PR.

And the biggest loser of all is this moron, who has been sucking up bandwidth here for months talking about his training, creepily stalking a woman and what he is going to do in the race and now, days before the race you've already conceded defeat. You are a loser on every level. now go ahead, tell us about the money you raised you weak minded tool.

I ran the NYC 1995 marathon. The wind gusts were gale force at the start, and going through each arch of the two Verazzano towers was like being shot out of a cannon. The wind was more or less due west at the start.

Maybe before insulting someone you should know something about their situation. I tried to break 3 @ NYC last year and went for it despite nasty headwinds and was unsuccessful. This year Philly was my goal race from the start so I haven't conceded anything. I was just suggesting to those looking for a PR that Philly is a much better option.

And yeah I'm really wasting bandwidth talking about my running training on a running message board. Making a video pitching running a marathon with your favorite tennis player is hardly stalking them. And if I'm the biggest loser on this forum then everyone else must comparatively be big time winners because I feel like a winner myself getting to run in front of my hometown family and friends in NYC in my final long run before Philly.

Although I don't have some of the natural talent required for distance runner I run with tons of heart and guts which in my opinion makes me a winner. Sorry that your life sucks to the point where you feel like you need to insult someone to this degree on an anonymous message board.

Last year's wind at NYC was barely noteworthy and certainly not "nasty" except in the eyes of someone looking to make excuses for his failings.

Might have affected sub 2:40 types who didn't have a pack to run with. For the 3:00 and above types, the effect was probably less than a minute.

I mean, your original plan was to run Philly anyway so that doesn't show that a runner only planning on doing NY should switch.

I don't disagree with a lot of what you're saying, but unless you can run sub 2:15, the most competitive marathons, like NYC, are just a time trial.

The only thing other runners and laymen alike care about is your PR. No one's going to be impressed that you finished top 50 at NYC if your time is 2:45, regardless of how bad the conditions may have been.

So, with that said, it's hard to justify paying to run a race like NYC with a combination of factors (e.g. difficult course, any northern wind resulting in a 20 mile headwind, sitting outside for hours before the start) that makes for significantly slower times for LRC's core demo than smaller, flatter races.

If all you aim to get out of your marathon is an impressive time that you can brag about then you're exactly right - there are better ways to cash in your training than slogging through tough conditions in NYC.

If you want to test yourself and put more stock in what a performance, and the months of training behind it, mean to you then it's time to embrace the suck.
