How long could Jakob Ingebrigtsen stay with Eliud Kipchoge tomorrow if he tried?

I'd say about HM as i've read reports that Jakob ran a 62 min HM and posted it on Strava, i never checked so cannot vouch for correctness.

Even if that is true, i would doubt that Jakob could replicate such long distance performance without preparing for it majorly.

If he is to run tommorow, i'd actually guess he could go for no more than 10 miles at Eliud's pace just because Jakob did not know he would race and he was not prepared.

Quite the contrary, I am a both a Norwegian and a Jakob fanboy, I am just legitimately curious about these theoreticals. I think it would be very impressive for the Olympic champion in the 1500m to hold on until 25km-30km at a marathon world record pace. Jakob has already said that could imagine himself running marathons one day, and it would be exciting to see what he could do in the marathon if he actually trained for it. So maybe one day we will see this theoretical play out.

Kipchoge won WC gold in the 5000m in 2003, and here he is, about to perhaps run a 2:00 marathon 19 years later. Who knows what the future will bring for Jakob? Maybe we will all be here in 2032, trying to predict Jakob's marathon performance at the Olympic games in Brisbane? I hope he remains healthy and motivated, because he is an incredible athlete get to watch.

Jim ran 12 minutes faster than Molly, also that was his first professional marathon after focusing on ultra trail world for years. The difference between running a hilly marathon with smooth rolling hills vs running up and down mountains climbing and descending thousands of meters is a completely different. If it wasn't, we would expect the pikes peak marathon be held by a sub 2:10 marathon.

i understand that you are a jakob fanboy and quite possibly the real jakob, but it does not make kipchoge look good at jakob's expense. nobody actually thinks jakob can keep up with kipchoge at the marathon. it's just like how nobody truly cares about how fast usain bolt can run a mile. it's a fun concept that shouldn't be taken seriously.

60.45 is 1 min 45 over his Half PR. Running 1:45min under he would be able to go further than 5 more k.

Trail running over super uneven terrain combined with climbing and descending step gradients is very technical and a LOT different to running long distances at speed on the flat like that which Kipchoge is used to. Kipchoge may be very good at UTMB after some specific training for those types of courses but I don't think he could just sign up for one and blow the world's best away.

14 miles. The marathon requires learned discipline with experience. But with newbie some naivete is good. Jakob would be going too soon from the track and racing. He would go out too hard. After halfway would become difficult.

Yes definitely not right away at UTMB.

With that said I think on most Ultra trail races under 50 miles, he could right away blow the world's best.

At least he has already mastered how to use drink stations. :)

Assuming 60:30 halfway I'd say 24 - 30k.

Jakob I is strong and could run a great half, but after 21k it would get very tough, very quick.

Nah I’m not the real Jakob. I just don’t think it’s fair to ask how long he could hang with the GOAT marathoner when he hasn’t even trained for the distance. Why not just ask what could Jakob run for a marathon?

A fair comparison to Kipchoge would be this: who could last a longer percentage at the other’s pace in their specialty event? Seems like most people here think that Jakob would last about 25K at Kipchoge’s marathon pace. That’s 59% of the race. For a 1500, 59% is 885 meters. Could Kipchoge hang with Jakob at 3:29 1500 pace for 885 meters? Doing so would mean coming through the 800 in 1:51 and holding on for another 85 meters. Could Kipchoge do that today? I doubt it.
