I am happy for her, I hope she continues to improve her fitness, the talent is still there.
Great progress in her return to find the joy in running. Happy for her.
First American overall too.
5:26 is slower than Hasay’s average pace for the marathon distance

It’s actually quite a hilly four mile course for what it’s worth. Eilish McColgan won in 5:13 pace and ran under 14:50 a few times this summer. If Cain is ~40-45 seconds behind her in a 5k right now that’s actually solid for this point in the year.

Really? Hasay was DNS at her last marathon/
I agree , it’s quite hilly and she ran it at midnight- probably not the ideal time of the day to race so it’s not a bad result
What is she doing now? Does she still have a pro contract? Is she working or in graduate school?

It’s not a bad result but the reality is she ran a 4 miler in Central Park in May in 21:50. Now she’s running 21:43. I have no idea where she is in her training cycle but short of her being in a base phase now (or taking it easy and having fun on NYears) versus maybe being more in shape in May, there is little to get excited about with this result other than the fact that she’s having fun and finishing races.
Our buddy, Gene Dykes, got a workout in also.

It's an unknown as to how hard of an effort McColgan put into the race. It's not a prestigious race.
In any case, it's good that Cain is racing and apparantly healthy.
I ran one of the Central Park 4 milers in 21:26ish years ago when I was not even in 16 flat shape. Okay if she wasn't able to see the road that well and therefore had to slow down and was tired. But she's certainly in much better shape than in that unfortunate video and good to see her running and enjoying herself. McColgan was probably running a tempo. I ran about her pace in a track tempo once, not sure what shape I was in. She's obviously a high 14 runner or better but who knows January 1.
0% chance that this was a race effort for McColgan. 5:13 pace is a threshold type effort for her. The hills in central park are really not that bad.
I'd bet most are not taking the race all that seriously.
considering the mens course record is something like 18:12 or so, it can't be *that* hilly. Also, sometimes hills are a nice way to break up the monotony and keep everyone interested in pushing the pace, so there's that.
It was a tempo run for Mary.

Probably true - which in itself could be a good sign. Seems like she is getting back some of the sheer enjoyment of running, something that is crucial if she is ever going to submit to the ordeal of training for ultra high performance middle distance running. There are lots of pressures involved with the sport at the highest level but the basic thrill of running has to be there before anything can be achieved.
I saw her at an Armory practice a few days back. She was doing a few mobility drills with hurdles and I "accused" her of prepping for the steeplechase. She just laughed. Nice to see her getting enjoyment from running.
EMc has been on a family trip across the U.S. the last two weeks. While I'm sure she's maintaining fitness, this is a NBD race for her.
