I think the window for this to be correct is for middleaged people in the 3:30-4:00 range.

3:25 1k is very fast for a 20 mpw hobbythonner
works OKish if you're aerobically trained
But there are HS boys running 2:30-2:35 for 1k all the time and I doubt they all could get down in the 2:30s for the marathon. They could if they specifically trained for the marathon for a few years though.

I run a 2:37 800m so around a 3:25 1k and there’s no way I can break 4.
My PR in the 1k is 2:28. I don't think I could touch 2:28 in the marathon.

this just shows this is nonsense because I ran 800 in 2.36.1 the summer I was training for a marathon and ran 2.51.
So basically we have the same time over 800 I'd probably be slightly ahead over 1k but one guy can't break 4 and the other can break 3.

RT^
Pretty close for me - 2:52.

My PR in the marathon is 2:25. I am certain that I can't touch 2:25 (or 2:28!) in the 1k.
This is so dumb. My best K ever was 2:37 in college and I've run 2:19 for the marathon and should be able to go faster. There's no way I could even touch 2:19 in the K. I didn't even break 4 for the 1500.
Theory=disproven.
I've never run an all out 1k, so I calculated my 1k split for my 1500 pr. Eerily it is exactly the same as my marathon pr.
It works for average 5k type joggers. Not going to work for elite 400/800 meter types. Devin Dixon is never going to break 2:20 in the marathon just like elite marathoners aren't running 2:05 in the 1000.

My PR in the 1000 is 2:24 (random TT after XC in college), and my half PR (several years later, much lower mileage) is 1:10, which is equivalent to 2:26 in the marathon. Although I am hoping to run faster for long distances, this is pretty accurate just based on past performances!

Uhhh... I find it kind of hard to believe that someone who can run a 2:37 800 can't break 4 in a marathon. Are you a sprinter or Rob Gronkowski or something?

Yeah, well, you're too elite for the equation to work. Nothing will work perfectly for everyone, especially on both edges of the bell curve.
WR for marathon is 2:01
WR for 1000 is 2:11.
Sub-elite is correct.
Women's WR is:
2:28 for 1000
2:15 for marathon
Sub-elite is correct.

Same...Did a 2:52 marathon. I haven't time trialed a 1km but I think I'd be just under 3min

Agreed. There are a lot of HSers who could run 2:35 and they would be dead and buried by the half marathon point with no shot of breaking 3:10, let alone going in the 2:30s or 2:40s.
