Yawn. When this guy posted that he thinks "people place too much emphasis on diet" he was obviously thinking of you.
a plant-based diet isn't foolish at all. You've obviously never tried it. if you have for more than a couple of weeks, i'd like to hear your story.
it works for so many people who aren't very physically active or trying to achieve anything athletically. i probably know 30-40 people who are vegetarians and are pretty active (rock climbing,
it IS foolish for athletes though, in my opinion.
I was running 60 miles a week a few years ago, running 2:33, 1:13:20's, 33:20's, 15:50's and was eating around 4,000 calories a day. Lots of animal protein. If I wasn't getting enough protein, i felt like i was going to break down. My carb intake was admittedly very high.
I haven't been running more than 5-10 miles a week since i ran a marathon 2 years ago and I only eat meat once a week, maybe less. I lift twice a week, do some mountain biking, and am stronger than I ever was when running 60 mi per week (i'm close to benching 200 lbs) and the no animal protein isn't an issue for me now. I look stronger. I am stronger. i feel better. healthier.
But I think if i were training every day I'd be screwed without more protein.
