Hello,
Over the years I have never had any long lasting injuries except for one which came from ramping up mileage too fast too soon and then coming back too quickly. I would like to start a thread of things absolutely essential to staying injury free as well as additional small things that could remedy or prevent aches and pains. I will rattle off a few and please help me add to the list so myself and other runners can benefit from these tips.
Here are a few off the top of my head:
- Never ramp up mileage too quickly (10% rule if it's a large jump)
- Don't push easy days
- SLEEP!!! (As Nick Symmonds put it, never wake up to an alarm clock)
- Don't race the workouts, handle the goal paces based on your current level of fitness
- Strength training a few times a week is crucial for runners to maintain good form and allow your body to get stronger to handle harder training
Please help me expand this list as well as give specific tips that can be utilized by runners of all different circumstances.
It is a goal of mine to go the entire year next year (summer base, cross, indoor and outdoor t&f) without getting injured
