When I was younger I worked for a veterinarian, often holding animals while they were examined or treated. I got to get a grip on them while they still were calm and non-aggressive. I would love to see you try to restrain an angry 25lb cat Mr. know-it-all.
^^ Total troll by OP, but random runner vs. a bobcat . My $ is on the feline.
I used to think I might be able to match/fend off a 50-70 lb mountain lion if I had a knife, or perhaps a baseball bat. Then I saw a single lion take down a waterbuck... it was game over so quick, it was hard to describe. After slowly stalking the animal for 30 minutes, once the lion burst into action, it reached the waterbuck in maybe 2 seconds, and had it in a death grip within 5 seconds later. Even from 50 meters away, you could sense the ferocity through the lion's fur . The waterbuck was clearly a strong animal - and most likely even a little heavier than the lion - but it had no chance whatsoever.
Since witnessing that, I have no such confidence that I'd be able to fight off a determined 70 lb cat with a knife or bat. Maybe if I had a knife, I could deal a cut that would kill it, but I wouldn't be confident I'd necessarily come out alive. I'm not small, either - 175 lbs - but I don't think that would help me too much.
A 35 lb cat is about the threshold where I think I MIGHT have a chance to survive a fight unarmed. So for the runner in Colorado - to come out alive vs a 35-40 lb cat - I'm impressed.
