Please don’t bash us I just want constructive help.
Over a year ago my then 15 year old came in second place in a local marathon. He won a few hundred dollars on cash. We didn’t know he had to abide by NCAA Rules as he was in high school and we just found out yesterday that they had this rule. He was just going with our state rules you can not compete in season which he wasn’t. The prize was mailed to us a month later and we made the mistake of depositing the money. Turns out now my son has several D1 schools interested in him to run.
We have a feeling that the few hundred dollars just ruined his collegiate career.
How can we make this right? My son is not a professional runner. He just happened to run a successful first marathon. He didn’t expect to come in second or win any money he just wanted to see if he could run 26.2. He didn’t even think he could break 3 hours but he did and then some.
He is a great kid 4.0 and a very high SAT score. He lives for running. It’s not fair to see his dreams squashed because of a rule we weren’t aware of at the time. My wife and I are not runners and we’re not athletes in high school.
