OP said US distance running. Yeah, yeah, I know. Whatever.
Reading comprehension is a skill you lack. The OP typed, "US running." The OP placed no restriction for country of birth.

So much this. Paul MF Chelimo FTW. I love this guy.
I'll miss Rupp for sure. It's awesome to see a white American runner up front with all the Africans. That cat can ball, know what I'm saying? Rupp's last 10k at Chicago was about as baller as anything I've seen from an American runner in my adult lifetime (1999 high school grad).
Oh come on! Isn't it obvious: Joey DeFeo.
legit 2:03 guy i miss him already
I'd trade a few things to be a few years younger, but not seeing thefast guys in the 70s and, uh, Salazar, is not one of those things.
Jager, Centrowitz, Drew Hunter, Chelimo, Korir, a number of too level US women. There is plenty of up and coming talent, a lot of it has already arrived and has more medals than Rupp.
Why would one miss Rupp? Rupp is like a Lance Armstrong wannabe. Yeah they both trained hard and skirted the rules, but only Armstrong was truly a champion. Rupp never won a global championship and so he cheated his way to a good athletics career, but he was never a global champ like Centro or Lance. Why miss Rupp? Is this a joke?

LOL - i hope you're trolling.
Ward (29) isn't an international star and is only 2 yrs younger than Rupp (31).
Rupp won an olympic silver when he was 26 and won an olympic bronze when he was 30. Rupp has AR's
Ward has 5.5 months to do the impossible to even be comparable, let alone be the hope for the future.
Plus all of his races since the Olympics have ben disasters.

He'll be working there very soon.
Based on his age relative to his event, and the repeated health issues he's had, you have to consider that Centrowitz may be closer to the end of his elite career than Rupp. I may end up being wrong, but you have to admit it's a strong possibility.
Alan Webb will be back, baby! And German Fernandez! to go 2-3 behind Paul Chelimo at the next Olympics in the 5,000.
Hunter is our future. He has a 3:36 pr already and he is only 20. He should be hitting world class times in the 5k in the next few years. His gait seems best suited for 1500 and 5k unlike Rupo who was able to move up to marathon.
very witty and dead right
Don't ever count out a former Yellow Springs H.S. Bulldog like Sam Borchers!

Any chance we can get Nijel Amos as well? He's living here.
I think our best option is to simply do what's been working best for the last 30+ years - get guys born in Africa and naturalize them - whether its Maree, Lagat, Meb,.

Korir is 31, Jagr is 29, Centrowitz is 28. They may all be done about the same time Rupp is.

Still young and will probably start to see some big improvements with Salazar going into a WC year next year. He’s extremely good at marketing himself and resonates with the young athletes. I could definitely see him contending for a medal in the coming years
I'm not sure what the OP specifically meant in terms of who will replace Rupp, but my interpretation was "what American is going to match Rupp's range?"
Who is the next American who will have the ability to go 3:50 in the mile, but still win a marathon major 4 years later? To be good at mile, 3k, 5k, 10k, HM, and Marathon and threaten his US records? Get Olympic medals?
I could see Chelimo matching this, but I'm uncertain on whether he will have a long career. Maybe Chez if he gets citizenship (he's already run 3:49 and has outstanding strength). Definitely no American in the NCAA right now, not Hunter. Jager's ceiling is the 10k but he has good mile-10k ability. Maybe Jenkins or sleeper pick Willy Kincaid?
