With his speed and muscle makeup I would say he's got a legit shot at breaking 1:50. Any predicitions?

Sure. Why not. He'll never be a 60m-100m guy and cap off in the 200m soon unless he changes the way he trains. If his coach wants to make he grind endurance then might as well move him up to the 800m.

I don't see why you think he can't continue being a 400m runner?
This is the kid with low 45 400 right? And mid 20 200m. He has plenty of speed already to be an elite 400m runner.
If he runs an 800 it's nothing but odd endurance work some 400 coaches like to do in winter.

You mean odd 400 coaches...lol.

If he doesn't work on his 60-100m speed his 200m and then eventually his 400m is going to cap. Just watch. Give it a couple of years but he needs to change the way he trains to be successful long term. You can quote me on this.

I don't disagree with you, but what about that guy, what's his name... Kirani James...?
I don't think he breaks 2:00 by a whole lot, maybe 1:57-8 or so
I predict 1:58 if he goes all out and runs smart
When?
Is it ever a good idea for sprinters to develop slow twitch muscles that will take away from their speed?
Did the fear of the other runners cause Cooper to want to move up to the 800? He can't beat Jamal Walton anymore especially after seeing the way Herron blew past him in the 300 this weekend. If he moves down to the 100 he can't beat Anthony Schwartz. His best bet is to stick with the 200 and leave the 800 alone.

He's not moving to the 800
His coach's approach appears to be that you throw intensity at kids and see what sticks. As Tyrese starts experiencing the inevitable diminishing returns of this approach, he probably needs to focus more on how to continue improving, even if it's very incremental, and less on being #1.
Fun fact: Tyrese cooper has split a 1:54 800 leg on his aau 4x800 team

That's a fun fact indeed. Unfortunately many on Letsrun won't truly understand how terrible 1:54 is. Especially compared to 45.2 or whatever.
Almost forgot , he did this while "dabbing" down the homestretch. Granted , a 45.2 is still more impressive, but it is an impressive achievement. If anyone wants the video I think it was the 2016 AAU championship
Looked on YT and couldn’t find it, link??

Of course he could race a sub-1:52 800m while training as a 200/400 athlete. Tyrese Cooper is still young enough to improve his 200/400. Posters on LetsRun often are encouraging talented 400m athletes to move up to 800m. Cooper is a talented 200/400 athlete. If Cooper altered his training to race 800 he may regret said decision. The opportunity cost of mileage and longer intervals would also sacrifice his 200m speed. Unless Cooper feels he's a future sub-1:44 800m runner, why bother. There is no reason for a 45.xx 400m athlete to move to 800m unless one feels they are a potential sub-1:44 800m athlete.
I hope not! wrote:

I agree with this. Last year (his sophomore year, but age of a junior) would scare me if I were his coach -- no PRs in either the 200 or the 400. I don't know why you'd get away from the faster stuff when (a) you haven't PR'ed since your freshman year, and (b) you're way to big to ever be a great 800 runner (I've stood next to him many times -- the dude was the size of a NFL safety when he was in 8th grade...). So I'm sure he'd run a 1:52 or so, but so what?
