The SI story was the definitive Ormsby story along with an article in the New York Times. I don't think she has ever commented publicly aside from "I don't know why I did it."
I taught an eighth grade class once that had about a dozen girls and one boy. We read the SI story in class. It was an intelligent group of kids. Someone said, "We should write to her." I gave the OK to do that but the only condition was no one could ask why she jumped. My kids wrote letters that contained depth and compassion way beyond their years.
It was a shock to get a letter at school that had "Ormsby" for a return address. Inside was a letter to me and a letter she wrote to my students. Kathy was very sweet. She detailed her life as it was at that time. She has a professional job where she helps people who have disabilities. She drives. She swims. She's very religious. She seemed at peace with herself.
There was another round of correspondence where my girls sent Kathy some type of gift and she responded with a box of candy and individual letters to everyone. The whole experience was very moving for all of us. I'm sure those thirteen kids will always remember her.
The one thing about the race that may have caused Kathy to snap (speculation here) was she set the collegiate record for the women's 10000 meters earlier in the season. Mid-way through that NCAA race, there were three or four women right with her in the lead pack. It was a much tougher race than she expected. Setting the record earlier that season may have inadvertently put her in a pressure situation that emotionally she couldn't handle.
Kathy is a very private person. Please don't try to contact her like we did. She lives in the present, not in the past. We all have to deal with pressure at some time in our lives and it's best to be compassionate before we judge others.
