Does anyone remember that story? She was in the lead pack and just ran off the track and jumped off a nearby bridge? This was D1.

Yes, she was deeply troubled and I believe suffered depression. She became paralyzed and still is in a wheel chair.
Bizarre

Was it in the mid 80s?

Good article on Ormsly (NC State), Holleran (UPenn), and Wazeter (Georgetown) and suicide attempts by top collegiate female runners.
Written about in The Silence of Great Distance.

The Silence of Great Distance is the best book on women's running, every runner and coach should read it.

Yeah, I still think about this. Never had anything to do with her but the whole thing was very haunting.
I agree - tremendous book.

I thought Mary Wazeter was Penn State? Book call "Dark Marathon" about her. Incredibly talented and very intelligent young lady.
1986.

How poetic. Sure, guys just have to show up and run. That's why none of them have ever killed themselves.
yes, very clearly. it was an utter horror.
I have never read the Silence of Great Distance but I will definitely check it out. I have read She Was Once a Runner, a self published memoir written by a female college distance runner w/ a similar experience.
Back in those days, we called it 10,000 meters.
Sad.
Here's another interesting piece on the eventual first place finisher at the race that this happened
There are many papers linking low cholesterol to depression, suicide, accident rates and violence. Pre menopausal women tend to have lower cholesterol compared to men (on average, there are always exceptions), and you can bet that dedicated runners obsessed w being thin (again, woman more likely than men with exceptions) will have even lower cholesterol.
Couple this with the pressures of scholastic and athletic performance, family history of mental illness and you further increase the odds of mental health issues. Coaches and teammates need to be aware of this and keep careful watch.
Just to be clear, having low cholesterol does not mean you *will* be suicidal.
Here are just a few links from bing on this topic:

I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
