that movie would make money. they need to make it.

Maybe Tobe Hooper could direct it!!!!
That book is too dated. I read it and for some reason I kept thinking that it read like a running version of "Breaking Away" the biking movie.
I think it would've been OK back in the 70's but not now. Personally I think it's a hackneyed cliche of a book.
you are wrong. A once a runner movie would be bomb.com!11
Who is Tobe?
I dunno... I'd sure want to see it, but there aren't very many americans that care as much about running as we do...
Bad idea.
Once a runner is not a screen play. The book doesn't appeal to non-runners, and any movie made would probably not be satisfying to any of us.
Who,past the 10th grade, thinks this would be a good idea?
Depends how it is marketed. Think about it. An individual against the world basically. School dumps him, girl dumps him, life is closing in, and he is out to prove everyone wrong in the way he can and defy the odds. Just need to get one or two big names in it and it would be a done deal. Box office smash of the year!
What are you talking about?
That is the most cliche story ever. It would be a horrible movie. The story is miserable.
The only reason runners like it is the way he describes workouts, races, etc. Stuff you cannot show on a screen.
This would be a terrible movie.
Sorry, you are wrong.
Maybe if you change Quentin Cassidy to an aspiring law student and the Olympic dream is replaced with getting wrongly accused minority off death row, then you might have something.
Runners are boring to everyone but runners. Sorry.
God forbid! Hollywood would never take a cliche story and make a horrible movie out of it. Perhaps Kevin Costner could star in it and change it to a post-apocalytic world where he is a sailor, or, no, a post-apocalyptic world where he delivers mail, or ....

It's good to see someone understands the strengths and weaknesses of books vs movies. The appeal of the book is intangible descriptions of things we have all experienced. On a movie screen you can't convey thoughts or feelings like Parker does in the book, without being horribly contrived and forced. Appreciate Once A Runner for the great book that it is. Every good book doesn't need to be made into a movie.
I actually adapted the novel to a screenplay for my Senior Screenplay. Though I did make some changes, the class and the professor really liked it.
I made Quenton out to be more of a prankster than he was in the book, adding in a few scenes for comic relief. The love story was already in place, so I didn't need to fabricate anything there. I made Bruce Denton the coach, as the actual coach really was a pointless character. I made Jack Nubbins play a role in getting Quenton removed from school...anyway, it's safe to say I made some changes and some fans of the book would probably get bent out of shape about it. However, what adaptation is ever 100% true to the book?
As far as the book being dated...well no kidding. Who's to say EVERY movie that comes out these days has to be set in circa 2005? Making a movie based on the novel and having it set in present day would be a terrible move.
Exactly.
Adaptions would need to be made from the book to the screenplay.
The people that would be the most amped up to see it, would likely be let down, because it did follow the book to the letter. Basically, you'd have a cult movie that the "cult" hated.
