(weve got to agree not to use another person's alias if it's already been used in the same thread--Im talking to you Track Nazi).
as a native also, i do have a problem with "San Fran". Have you ever told anyone "I'm from San Fran"?

Pretty much all the good runs have already been mentioned.
please, the so called "good runs" are infested with too many runners as it is. do you think i would give up my own "good runs" on a public forum like this?
no, the good runs have not already been mentioned.
i cant decide who i like better on my runs--the track nazi or the bushman at the wharf.
I capitalize.
Good run...start at Kezar, pick your favorite trail down to the beach, turn right, up hill past Cliff House turn left onto Lands End trail, continue to Seacliff neighborhood, up Lincoln into the Presidio, stay on clifftop trail and go under the Bridge and down the steps to Crissy Field...run to Fort Mason turn around and come back up same steps and back up clifftop trail until you come out onto Lincoln again. Go down Lincoln and at the bottom of the hill make a left into the maintenance yard and then a sharp right onto a wooden deck trail, follow this up through the trees and come out at the old hospital, turn right and exit Presidio at 16th avenue. Turn left and then cross Park Presidio, Turn left on the Park Presidio trail and follow all the way to Golden Gate Park. At the Rose Garden turn left and go up the hill past the DeYoung make a right opposite the COnservatory of Flowers and then the first left and you'll find yourself back at Kezar.
19-20 miles give or take all in the city and 75% of it on trails. You'll see many of SF's finest sights too.
Enjoy
Ha. That's so right on.
Fantasma?
gee, she wont even need a map with those directions! ;)
just run along the north and western edge of the city, keep the bay/ocean in site and you'll be fine. or follow another runner.
no. im #2 and #99.
btw, i think it would EXCELLENT if we could find out the birthdate of the track nazi. we would notify all the training clubs to show up, so that an unusually large number of people would be blocking lane 8. then everyone in the stadium could burt out singing happy birthday to her and we could have a big frosted birthday cake and even a bouncy house!!!
someone find out her birthdate. maybe parks & rec knows.
Seriously, I cannot believe anyone has not mentioned Marin yet (except for the guy who talked about Mt. Tam). If you want to do your long run, park your car near the GGB (or drive across it but it is five bucks on the way back) and run in the Marin Headlands, which is way better than running in SF - unless you don't like hills - and that is saying something.
jsg
i had a sic high school coach that showed me that detailed 19-20 mile run one time...truly a sic run...("sic" means awesome)...great run, rnrgirl should do that one....
that was my first thought. just run across the bridge and then hook up with the trails on the west side of the bridge. that's as good as running gets.
very funny....I've been there
So many good miles to be had. This one over the bridge and out into the headlands sounds especially appealing for its simplicty (directionally challenged as I am). That is if it really is that simple. Will it be evident when I cross the bridge just where I ought to go? Is this a trail? Seriously though, thanks everyone for all the great advice!
Yeah it is easy. Just park on the sf side, there is a dirt parking lot with no fee. Run across the bridge in the direction of traffic. Once on the north side cross under the bridge using obvious stairs and up the other side. You end up in a little parking lot with a trail starting on the other side of it. No start running up!
Another good run is to start (park) at ocean beach and go south. You'll find a well used single track past fort funston. You basically run along the bluffs or the beach as far as you want while the craziness of citylife slips away. When you get your measure mileage in turn around and run back. You can easily do 13miles and if you get creative 20+.
track nazi would get stommmppppeeed. big tme
If you want to run with a group on Mt. Tam try www.tamalparunners.org. 800+ member club with several weekly runs + track workouts and monthly club races, mostly on trails.
