According to Jack Daniels' VDOT tables, easy training paces should be roughly 7:28-8:33/mile, 4:38-5:19/km. These paces aren't set in stone of course, some days you might feel you'd need to go extra slow, and some easy days you're surprised by your swiftness. Easy jogging is truly a feeling, it simply is going at a pace that allows for full-blown conversation and allows you to run fast and/or long for your next quality session. Think of it as a through warm-up, starting the run at a shuffle and allow your body to dictate what's the right pace for that particular day.
For example, my watch tells me that I start at 10:30-11min pace for the first 450-500yards, then my average pace for an easy day is typically 7:45-8:15, but I hit a 7:05 mile today, but three weeks ago I ran average pace of 8:38 miles on an easy day before a quality session. My Daniels' suggested paces are supposed to be 7:15-8:11 these days. At the end of the day these are just numbers.
What's important is that you run your fast days at the right pace/intensity and your recovery days should be done at conversational jogging, whatever that means for you. American running greats like Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter were notorious for starting their runs as slow as 7min./mile pace, their marathon pace is 4:58/mile. The Kenyans are too known for starting their runs at a shuffle and building upwards from their.
I posted the numbers for reference, but really the point is jog as slow as you feel is necessary. Thanks for reading this epic and best of luck to whatever it is you're trying to accomplish in life.
Thank you so much!
Just go off of feel. I used to listen to pace charts and never improved. Run whatever feels easy and do your workouts correctly. Moderation and consistency my friend. 7:00-7:20 pace @ 80mpw = 13:42 for me. Pace calculators would have said otherwise.
