Yes. Positive polls encourage people, especially those who are not well-educated on the candidates, to vote.
I can definitely see how rigging the polls would help in the primaries. Remember that early on there were 17 Republican candidates. If Trump was able to swing the polls in his favor by just a few percent, that would have put him ahead of most of the other candidates and give him legitimacy in the eyes of many voters. It would have also given him more publicity which I'm sure is very much needed at that point in a campaign.
