the real question is how long before some other wacko decides they are going to trudge 350 or 400mi?

I repeat: I never even heard of her until a month or so ago, here at letsrun.
You can squat and do it in the desert and no one will see it if they are not looking at you. It will evaporate.
Arabs do it all the time, but of course they wear dishdashas and robes for modesty. Of course there IS the toilet paper question or issue.
I have my questions about this 300-mile thing, but really have more pressing issues on my mind right now: such as will my cellar get flooded tonight by all this $#@!@ rain we are getting on top of the snow that has refused to melt all winter?
Ahhh nature.

I know of some crackpot who wants to do 500 miles in 6 days. He will probably stop though. Real winner.
oh...god the lengths we will go to beat africans

Not really all that impressed... 300 miles is a lot... but that pace comes out to under 4 miles per hour...
It's not only farther, but also faster than Karnazes' 262 mile, 75 hour run (about 3.5 mph -- Pam's was 3.75 mph).

The six day is an established event and Yiannis Kouros' WR is 638 miles. The AR is 554.
Of course, everybody stops at some point. The "nonstop" thing is a meaningless, undefined criterion that Karnazes made up to try to give himself some distinction, since he's not good enough to get the established records. And now Reed has beaten him to the punch, much to his annoyance, no doubt.
These solo efforts are ripe for abuse and will never result in ratified records of any sort, but they will get headlines until the media gets tired of them.
i don't really care

you know i could understand this if they were trying to cross antartica on foot, or solo K2
but this is dumb

Perhaps you should expand your horizons a bit?
Like say, Pawtucket? Whenever I play PowerBall I always buy the tickets in Woonsocket, by the way.

She was on 60mins last night. She did have that Warren Zevon excitable-girl look to her. Her husband said when they go on a car trip that lasts more than a few hours, she has to get out and run. They let her out, have lunch or something, and pick her up a few miles down the road. I guess she gets something to go and takes it with her.
She runs 5 times a day. If her kids are playing soccer she'll be jogging around the outside of the field. It's very strange.
And I got ansty yesterday when I had to put off a hill workout, this lady sounds downright cuh-razy.
yeah, the 300 mile thing sounds pretty hardcore, but i agree that the "non-stop" term is more than a little loosely defined. It's not even walking non-stop, just going without sleep, from what I read a while ago in runner's world. Very impressive achievement, no doubt, but I'd like to see a record established for actually running non-stop, one foot in the air at all times.
i really dont have that much respect for ultramrathoners than i do for runners of marathons and under. I can just see her taking her nice breaks and just breathing in the fresh air. Sure it takes patience and skill to run for that long, but i'd say its at the level where lets say a HS'er runs sub 4
16 minute miles aren't that tough until you go past 250. Maybe if you losers tried to run this far, you would have more respect for her accomplishment. Most of you probably haven't even done a 200 mile week.
...I'd take my present condition of being able to run a 51/2:00/4:29/9:34 (high schooler) over being able to trudge 300 miles. In the pure, primitive run-or-be-eaten world, how the hell is that going to help you, ever? When it comes down to a mountain lion, me, and Pam Reed, I'm not going to be the one getting disemboweled while I'm on my single 10 miler, and she's on her 4th 7 miler of the day.
(Sorry if this offends anyone, but I just don't think it's that incredible.)
what a crock of shit. she "ran" a blazing 49-50 minute 5km pace. what an accomplishment. sure puts all of us naysayers in our places. i wonder if i could even walk that godamn slow.
cant wait til the next pam reed freakathon comes around. should be a doozy. maybe shes gonna do it "running" backwards next time....crabwalk anyone?
laaaaaaaaaaaaaate
Well there are reports of tribes of Native Americans on the great plains that would run down animals like deer. Due to the fact that humans can maintain a a steady pace for a long time.
To all those who say that high miles=hurt soon. I would have to say that if someone can run 300 miles in a shot. Then 100-210 miles a week is areally not all that impressive.
To all those who say this was easy and she was only doing like 4.75 miles per hr. Frist atempt to stay up that long, if you can do that then try to walk for 80hrs. She might not have been running very fast, but I am sure that she experinced as much or more pain. Then most of us do, in our races.
Hell I can run five miles at five min pace no problem. Running a sub 4 mile is not any easyer, due to the fact I can run five at five. Along the same lines I bet if you could get evey top Marthon to try and run 300 miles non-stop. You would get something like a 75% DNF.
don't get me wrong, i am mildly impressed by her feat; not so much for her athleticism, but for her tenacity and dedication. on an athletic level, i would be equally impressed with someone who could squeeze a continuous 3 foot turd out of their anus, non stop of course, as i am with mrs reed's 300 mile shuffle. However, i dont believe it would take the said individual 80 hours to accomplish such a feat, making it more appealing to the general public as a spectator event. let the games begin.
