Recently I've been running and feel like I can't take a deep and get any air. My chest feels kinda tight. Today I had to stop 3 times in 40 min just to try and breathe. Also when I try and take a deep breath I've been coughing while running/up to an hour after. I do have allergies but wouldn't that season be about over? I also have a lot of mucus/snot when running but I'm not sure that's related. Any ideas what this could be?
I've had this EXACT problem minus the coughing, which I'm guessing is because you're trying to keep pushing yourself through the runs and straining your lungs. It's allergies--post nasal drip related. I was in denial about it for a few years and my runs were completely hit or miss. Some days I was desperately gasping for breathe and some days I would feel really good.
One way to prove this is to run on an indoor treadmill and see if you still have these same breathing problems. It's definitely allergy season where I am. Around this time every year, I've called my doctor thinking I have bronchitis, but it's just coughing from mucous build up.
I use a nasal spray, and it works wonders. I don't know if there is any way around this, but the only way I've been able to have the problem disappear consistently is to use the nasal spray everyday.
