Did Rupp underperform or did Ward outperform. I would have expected the time differential between the two of them yo have been bigger. Given that neither of them won the race, their respective times can be considered maximal effort. I don't think Rupp blew up that badly either. Is the takeaway that Rupp isn't that good after all, or is Ward better than we think he is?
Is Rupp only 1:25 better than Ward in the marathon?

Rupp is simply 1:25 better. If Rupp run 2:07:15 in Rotterdam, Ward will finish the same race in 2:08:40.
That is how it works. -
Ward's training was optimized for the marathon while the focus of Rupp's training was split between 10k and marathon.
-
Rupp is probably a lot faster than Ward, but Rupp didn't run the tangents. Ward did. I've watched the 2016 Olympic marathon twice and estimate that Rupp probably ran 26.4 or 26.5. Ward probably ran 26.3. That's a HUGE difference.

Tactical race dude. He put that whole 1:25 gap on him in the last 10k when the real racing started.
-
No to all of this. Rupp ran a tactical race to win and ran what the race dictated. Ward ran his best, even paced effort to PR. It just worked out that his PR got him with 1:30 of Rupp on that day. If they both show up at a rabbited affair on a cool day, there is no chance Ward is withing a 1:30 of Rupp. Shoot, just use the McMillian tables that everyone loves to use and put in 26:44 for Rupp and 1:01.42 for Ward (no 10 PR listed on his IAAF profile) Rupp 2:05.46 to Ward's 2:09.51. Big fan of both runners, but Rupp is on another planet compared to Ward with regards to foot racing. Even if you think Rupp isn't a sub 2:06 guy, hard to argue that he isn't capable of 2:07.00 or better.

lol
Only 1:25 better than Ward?
What everyone is missing is the fact that the 1:25 difference came in the last 10k.
So if Rupp was to run a marathon flat out against Ward, that 1:25 difference would GROW exponentially... probably to around 5 minutes total if not more!
But yea... good job morons. -
Like is Kipchoge only 3 minutes or whatever better than ward? 😂
-
tactical race??
all in the last 10k??
i don't think you guys understand that Rupp was within seconds of silver and couldn't get it. He didn't run a tactical race, he was beat at the end. He looked exhausted those last few miles. I'm sure Rupp is more than 1:25 better than Ward, but in this particular race Ward probably did outstanding while Rupp just did well. -

So 6th is better than 3rd? :) Hahahahahaha

Ward is better than we think he is. -
Remember, the temperature was 78 degrees, with 95 percent humidity.

I see Rupp besting Hall's 2:06 (and maybe his 2:04:58) in a rabbited race. The guy is a stud even if Rojo thinks of Rupp as just some guy that has never broken 2:10.
Until Sunday, I thought of Ward as the best of America's current crop of guys that show up at the US Road Running Circuit races. Now I think of him as this generation's Beardsley. He may eventually go around 2:08. -
I hope Rupp runs faster than 2:05 on a non wind-aided course.
I hope rupp runs faster than Ryan Hall's 1/2 Marathon american record. (I definitely think it's possible)
I just want everyone to realize, like him or not, that Rupp is by far the greatest American distance runner ever.
records plus his olympic medals will make it hard to refute

Also, remeber that Rupp ran some crazy miles with Kipchoge, so his pace was clearly sub-optimal.

None of this made any sense. Yes, he ran a tactical race and the top 3 could have run faster. -

Didn't Rupp throw in a 14:26 5k from 30k-35k? That's definitely tactical and indicates less than ideal pacing for a 2:10 marathon. Unlike ward who was running optimally for himself, Rupp was racing for a podium spot. -
It actually means AlSal is good but Eyestone is better- And a mustache brings runners to a whole different level of greatness. If Rupp could grow a 'stache he'd go sub 2 easily.

Bill Parcells said of head coaches: you are what your record says you are.
Well, Rupp's record says that he is a small amount of time better than Ward.
Marathon is a tricky critter.
