2 years ago someone could tell me they'd completed 12 marathons and I'd be impressed, but now I hear that and I think, "what's your PR?" My marathon PR is terrible (3:51, should be at least 40 minutes faster based on other times, and that's adding 5-10 minutes to the equivalent performances), and it kind of makes me feel like not a real runner, but my 2 is enough to know that any able bodied person can complete a marathon. I guess it's cool if they enjoy doing it, but acting like just completing a bunch is some kind of feat is weird to me now. It's so different from how I thought about it before I started running, and I think I might be a bit elitist despite being nowhere near elite.
Now, if someone was a 5 hour marathoner for years and then gets themselves to finish in 3:59, that is something I can respect and depending on circumstances be impressed by. But just doing a bunch without getting faster isn't impressive to me, and it feels weird to think it used to be.
