Bekele was also ended up with a huge string of nagging injuries that basically ended his track career and sidelined him each season. He even had to have a personalized track built with a softened surface in his attempts to prevent further problems.
So yes, he likely did have problems racing throughout the year. He managed to stave them off for a while, but eventually, they caught up to him.
That being said, I'd rather see professionals burn brightly with amazing performances for a short period of time like Komen or Bekele, rather than see them focus so much on preserving themselves that they barely race.
A short period of time??? Farah has been at the top for about 5 years and that's with racing sparingly and no records or fast times chased.
Bekele was on top for about 8 years. That's while racing a lot, running fast times, racing top-notch competition, setting world records, winning the diamond league, using a variety of tactics, etc.
Again, a "short period of time"? What are you talking about?
