Why not just send him some of the vent's posts, outline how much faster he wouda run with better pacing and more O2 in the air?

Hey, I sh*t the bed in my marathon this weekend too. Marathons are very difficult to get right, and no matter if you do great, do poorly or are even forced to drop out, you give everything. The marathon is a cruel beyotch. Just let your friend know that you do not judge him or her by his or her PR, and that they can always try again.

tell them that while he was physically fit, he was mentally weak and was not tough enough to hack the marathon and that he should focus on not falling apart just because things got tough.

Tell them losers make excuses and complain about the conditions while champions rise above them.

Just tell him that running is a sport. Sometimes you win and sometimes you get beat. Winning for him would be getting whatever goal he set. He got beat - maybe by the weather, maybe by the course, maybe he just didn't have it. At least his goal wasn't to just finish.

Sometimes I think people think there is some magical earned fairness in this sport, like if you did X,Y, and Z you deserve to have your race go exactly how you want it to. That would make winning or achieving your goal or whatever that much less gratifying. You have to perform when it counts, period.
