Great run for her.
How hot was it? Looked like it was supposed to be low 60s about the finish time.
63 at the start (and just for the first couple miles, between 66 and 68 in the middle/most of the race, 63 when they got into Boston. Warm but not blazing hot.
Eh I would say more like 2:28-30 on the fast end. 2:25 would be ambitious.
Another average result for Spence.
Has anyone explained why she went D2 over D1? Was it really just a marketing ploy? To create an underdog story?
Pretty solid debut. By 2020 Davila, Goucher, Hastings, and Flanagan will probably no longer be factors, which would give Neely Spence a good chance of making the team at the marathon.

10 to 15 degrees cooler than LA
Maybe...
But by 2020 I see Huddle, Sisson sitting there as clearly better than Spence. Then you have people like Hasay, Infeld who may make the jump in 2020. I'm sure there are 2-3 more I am missing.
I'd agree it was an average result by Spence, I don't think that would even crack the top 25 in terms of US women marathon debuts. Not a bad day given the conditions. The heat was tough, but she would have been lucky to be top 10 at the Olympic Trials this year with an equivalent performance given that Trials was hotter and more exposed from start to finish.
Top recent US women debuts that I can think of that would rank ahead in no particular order:
Shalane Flanagan
Kara Goucher
Deena Kastor
Amy Hastings
Laura Thweatt
Kellyn Taylor
Stephanie Rothstein
Renee Metivier Baillie
Serena Burla
Lauren Kleppin
Becky Wade
Blake Russell
Marla Runyan
It'll be interesting to see how more accomplished women distance runners fare once they make their debut: Molly Huddle, Kim Conley, Emily Infeld, Katie Matthews, Rochelle Kanuho, Tara Welling, etc.
Not trying to be downgrade Neely's performance, as it was respectable in tough conditions. But given the marketing of her going into the race, it seemed like a bit of a letdown performance.

Will she be running 2:20 by 2020?
Huddle is only one year younger than Linden and Cragg. Shalane and Kara may be too old in 4 years but not the other 2.

She said her goals were top 10 and 2:35. She did both (was 9th). Not sure how it is a letdown, since she did exactly what she hoped to do. She never claimed she was going out there to win, or to run the "fastest debut by an american," so I'm not sure why anybody is disappointed. It isn't on her if other entities over-marketed her.
It was a big story her going to the Olympic trials. People believed that she was going to be on the team. Delusional they are. This was not even a top 10 performance at the trials. She would have been somewhere around 15-25 at the trials finishing alongside unsponsored athletes.

I would say more like 2:30.
Can you point me to the PRE race media where she said she only wanted to run 2:35? It's like a game of HORSE - bank shots only count if you call them.
To the poster who compared her debut to Steph Bruce - Bruce ran close to 2:40 I believe - you're confusing her Houston race with her debut.
I think Neely's race today compares pretty well with Becky Wade's debut.

Not warm at all. It was also cloudy. The issue was the strong headwind.

Think she went D1 for a semester or so, no longer remember where (OK State or Oregon maybe), but went back home.
Hey, Everyone ran slow on this day. You did not see any men go 2:08, 2:09, 2:10, or 2:11. One under 2:13, just four under 2:15. This is not, I repeat, Not the day to criticize times. She had a 1 min positive split. Not many elites did better. Top 10 is solid. Sub 1:10 HM, 2:35 debut on a slow day, indicates a lot of upside.
But we know the negative Nancys here will say other wise.
You'll find more if you want to look for yourself.
Here goes that Hanson's loser again. Your jealousy is so unattractive and uninformed. Neely gets hype because he is a total class act, who works her tail off- and never talks trash about anyone!

This is completely incorrect! She said sub 2:30 and it was only after the race she changed her stance on what would be respectable.

So she could be coached by her father. An underdog story? Really?
