I used to live in Amherst, right on the Amherst/Hollis line. I always ran into Hollis because there were more hills, trails, and unpaved roads in that direction.
There's a big half-marathon in Hollis every October or November called the ApppleFest run or something like that. It's a good, hilly, low-traffic course. A lot of my runs were around there.
There's also a killer race in Derry called the Boston Prep 16-miler that you'll have to do.
I hooked up with the Gate City Striders, a pretty big running club there. You should look into them.
The only bad thing was that there are not many streetlights in that area. Some of my runs were REALLY DARK. If that matters, you might want to move to Nashua or Manchester rather than one of the small towns like Amherst, Milford, or Hollis.
Good luck.
Thanks for that info. Anyone else?
You might want to check on the forum for the GCS. Ask questions there. Runners are in all of those towns. Nashua has 2 new High Schools with brand new tracks both accessible to Mine Falls Park for gentle trail running.
Check Portsmouth if you are open to being that far east.
I run with GCS now, and we've got a group going out Sat mornings from Hollis for long runs, varying distances and paces. You can get all the info from the forum at the GCS
site. Hope to see you there!
There is a lot of variety of running in all of those towns. I think you would want to check out housing prices and schools if that is applicable and not just choosing a town to run in as the running is good whereever you run. What type of running are you interested in: competitive, marathons, track, ect.?
......
Hey "Check Out" will I see you running on Saturday?
Jim
I am also moving to southern NH...sometime in late May for a job. More specifically, Portsmouth, NH (If I can find an apartment and roommates). Any specific info about Portsmouth or the surrounding area would be appreciated. I heard Portsmouth H.S. has some good trails...anyone know if this is true?
also, any other running clubs up there? preferably with some younger runners involved (I'm 21)
thanks all
Portsmouth isn't far away from Exeter where Gwyn and Mark Coogan are living and coaching. I've seen both of them running round town. It isn't far from Durham either, where UNH is. I would imagine that you could find contact info for the Coogans on the Phillips Exeter website.
thanks for the info ex...I haven't heard much about Exeter but they seem to be a solid HS xc team haha
I'm really just interested in doing some road races and lowering my prs (17:00 5k, 35:58 10k XC) and hopefully get into triathlons if I have time. Obviously I'm not bursting with talent but I'm just looking for some people to run with when I get up there.
Southern NH has quite a good running community. If you're up for the trip, you can drive to Northern Mass. and join the Merrimack Valley Striders or the Whirlaway Racing Club. If you stick around the Exeter/Durham area, you could probably find some people from UNH to train with.
'TDF' I'll be running this Sat.. unless we get another 2 feet of snow, in which case bring your snowshoes and we'll
get a group out for that.
