Webb only needs to run 2:18 to qualify.

As in, damn near everyone going to the trials.
Only 11 US runners have gone 13:10 or better for 5k outdoors since 2008. Only 9 US runners have gone 27:34 or better for 10k outdoors since 2008. What is impressive is that Webb did the 10k as a one off deal and he only did 4 professional 5ks on the track back in his prime. He clearly had some impressive range when he was at his best. His 5k/10k times are definitely what you would want to see when you are looking for marathon potential.
webb's been getting demolished in triathlon, so might as well try marathon.
I wonder why he never did a marathon just to get the appearance fee. Even now he'd probably pick up a pretty nice paycheck from a major marathon just for toeing the line.

Could Webb do a marathon training mesocycle, run CIM and qualify for the trials????
I think with his ability and tri training he's capable. Plus he would be the only runner to qualify for every event 800-marathon and world cross. 'Nuff said!
Have you felt the pain it takes to run a marathon hard enough to qualify for the trials. The guy was to weak mentally to get back on the mile, good luck in the marathon.
Plus the marathon is long ways from the 1500. No gurantee a miler type can make that transition at even a sub elite level, especially probably not having a good long training period for the race.
He would have a much better shot at the half standard, much easier for a miler to make that jump.
What about a mentally weak 27:20 10000m runner??? How fast could they run a marathon??????

"your"?
The REAL question is could Webb come off his triathlon training with a bigger base and start training specifically for the 1500/5000 and make the team? I think this is more realistic than making it in triathlon or marathon.
Scapula fractures heal in 6 weeks, so he's been good for one month, and should be over 100 miles a week by now.
Unless of course he's a talented but lazy slacker with a weak mind.
3:46 miler. Five minute training miles should feel easy. He needs to smooth out his gait and lose some muscle.

Sad to hear he doesn't compete in sports anymore. I hope he at least runs to stay in shape.
Webb is coming for the steeplechase Olympic trials. Mark my words.

He's focused on triathlons. Short course, not ironman. So going to the marathon is unlikely.
Puskedra just blew the trials wide open. If Puskedra can pr by 18 min then Webb has a chance.

One reason I think it's possible is his tri training. He's doing 2+ hour bike rides so he's used to moving that long. With marathon specific training he could have the required fitness by CIM or even Houston.
I have been a runner and a cyclist, and a "2+ hour bike ride" is nothing. The shortest ride a cyclist or triathlete does is 2:00.
The bike training also does very little for you as a runner.
Why would he want to do this?

Yes, but a 1:47 and 3:53 in HS are NOT. Also, when you can run 1:43 and 3:30, you are likely not also a top marathon talent. Not that you need to be one to break 2:18.
Of course he had tremendous range in his prime, but that was 8 years ago. Some people can be at their best at 32, but he was not one of them.
Of course you look for 13:10/27:30 type times for a 2:08-2:10 marathoner, and many have them. In his prime I have no coubt he could have run sub-2:18. But now? No matter what kind of training he took up I would bet all the money I have that he could not make it.
Maybe he could squeak under 2:18, but these people who are saying 2:12 ... what planet are you from?

I'd say NO way... old web could.... BUT, Rod Dixon was able to race a great mile then run a great marathon. If Webb put his focus on the half, he could qualify at Houston. Doubtful though to see him hit the full standard. Maybe the old one from 2008....
Rod ran a 3:57 mile in 1977, and then a 3:58 in 1978, then a 3:58 in 1979, then a 3:59 in 1979. but his all-time best of 3:53, 3:54 and 3:55 were done in 1974-1975. As were his best in the 1500 of 3:33, 3:36-3:37.
He was primarily a 3000m-5000m runner for the last half of the 70's ('76-80), and he was always at or near the top of the annual lists in those events. and when his nation joined the boycott of the '80 Games, he said he didn't want to cool his heels for the last half of the '80 European season while the rest of the world was competing in Moscow, so he entered several elite road races that summer. Winning most of them. He made some good money from this too. He continued this in 1981 and '82. He ran XC some, but I don't think he ran a single track race after February of 1980 (13:26 indoor 5k).
He hit his stride in the marathon in 1983.
So even his greatness in those two disparate events was separated by about 8 years.
So maybe Webb could do it, since he hit his peak in the Mile about 8 years ago?
