A high school soccer player is running a 100 to 120 miles a week in order to maintain fitness for XC and track? How many high schoolers could handle this amount of mileage and not break down?
Amanda Bakley of Pennsauken, one of the nation's premier steeplechasers, has set up some college recruiting visits, her track coach Phil Zimmerman said on Tuesday.
Bakley, who plays soccer for Pennsauken in the fall, will visit Elon (9/19 - 9/21), the University of Toledo (10/11 - 10/12), and Lipscomb University (11/14 - 11/16). According to Zimmerman, she has also been in close contact with Temple.
This past spring, Bakley exploded with several red hot performances, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Nike Nationals in North Carolina in the 2-K steeplechase in a personal best 6:57.49!!
Bakley also ran PR's of 5:11.33 for 1,600 and 10:59.56 for 3,200.
Although she's playing soccer, Zimmerman said Bakley has averaged between 100-120 miles a week running for the last 4 to 5 weeks. Zimmerman said the plan is to keep her fitness level high during soccer, and when the season ends get ready for either the Foot Locker or Nike NE Cross-Country Regional Championships.
