About the personal attack I guess it is your argument when you have nothing else to contribute. Like the guy who told off wejo for grammar. I think the industry is losing a lot of money when we, health professionals, discredit the snake oils that supposedly make you run faster or longer. Please sell those solutions to the Africans and see what they say. But I guess you know better than them how to run and what a runner needs.

To the point now. There is no reason for people to spend their easy or hard earned (I learnt) money to buy sports drinks. If you want, you can add some energy in your drinks yourself, it 's the same thing. If you so desire read Dr Noakes' books on hydration and his research.

Anyway, when it comes to what you eat and drink do your own search and do not buy in what the industry wants to sell to you.

And some advice. If you want to reduce weight, fat and the chances to get Type 2 Diabetes then reduce the amount of calories that you drink. Do not increase them just because you exercise. This is the current recommendation of all the major medical associations in the world.

Personally, I understood exactly what he was talking about and suspect most people did and I like the fact that he does not sound like a Yale dissertation. (Btw, I am aware this is a run on sentence.)

No one really gives a shit what a pro-doping, irascible opportunist like Dr. Canova thinks. That aside, it's true that some men capable of finishing in close to two hours can race a marathon without bonking if they pace themselves properly -- but why take that risk? Most big races involve pace surges and at least some wind, and these things deplete runners much more quickly, all else being equal. If a 2:05 guy ingests even a couple of gels or 200 kcal worth of sugar out there, it might make all the difference in the world.

I also wonder what the plebes here who are praising Meb would be saying if Ryan Hall made it to past 30K in the lead and blamed finishing three minutes behind the winner on having to barf. I'm not invalidating Meb's excuse here, just imagining how different the response might be when the runner isn't as widely liked or respected. I don't think it's necessary to commend Meb for his supposed toughness here -- anyone can get going after a bout of vomiting, especially someone who has financial incentives.

Because for a couple of years he's "raced" like a douche bag, or a thief, or a flake, or something.

The fact that Hall's morbid antics are threatening to define his career doesn't mean that Meb ran with any more or any less guts yesterday than he ever has. In fact, Meb's last mile was only about 5:40 -- not at all gutsy by any stretch (although probably quite smart, which is more important).

I don't know all the science, but I've found electrolyte tabs washed down with water helped me to keep from bonking on a 200 mile bike ride. And gels in marathons also serve a purpose for me, help stave off (but won't completely prevent) a bonk. Training is also necessary. But you need some calories (not to mention caffeine) out there, especially at race pace. It helps.
