I agree with Malmo!
I agree with Malmo!

Probably gonna run into copyright issues if you steal images from a real artist, and the brosjo are not creative or clever enough to come up with original art. That is, original art that is better than the kindergarten drawing that a soccer mommy sticks on the fridge.
There is no copyright for dead artists, and besides, I'm not talking about reproducing someones art, I'm talking about rendering Letsrun's logo with the styles of famous artists - fuzzy, washed-out Monet, hard brush strokes of the late works of Van Gogh, paint drippings of Pollock, repetitive images and neon colors of Andy Warhol's Marilyn.
I, too, share malmo's aesthetic preference for a more cerebral yet innovative LRC t-shirt. Mass produce and transform LRC's vulgar logo into something campy by arranging them in repetitive panels organized by color (e.g., Front of shirt) and black-and-white (e.g., Back of shirt)- something akin to a diptych a la Andy Warhol. Alternatively, one might consider re-rendering the logo in Roy Lichtenstein's comic strip-like technique of Benday dots and lettering complete with speed lines to impart the feel of speed/movement in the static motif. The LRC logo, and the primary colors used within it, would lend itself well to the techniques of these two pop artists.
For your edification: those speed lines actually have a name, they're called 'hites'. Hits are usually paired together with briffits. So now you know....
Not sure why everyone hates them. I laughed out loud when I saw it and could definitely see these being popular with the college runners.
I disagree. The whole famous artist thing has been done to death. In college, everyone had those Van Gogh, Monet, Einstein on a bike, Melting clocks, etc..
Totally hackneyed
Everyone? Really? If everyone had them surely you could show some examples? Take as much time as you need.
Again, everyone in college had those famous artist posters. It's not original and it is not going to sell more shirts. I refuse to buy one. I'd rather buy the current design.
How about something more original? A quote from a famous runner that has posted here.
Something like "Feel the Wind in my face -- Henry Rono @ letsrun.com"

And a picture of a famous running trail somewhere or a big hill?
Have the actual site logo (small and tasteful), somewhere too.
I'd buy the current shirt. Sure to be a classic with the controversy over whether it is a good design or not.
Wow. Surprised at this thread. For $15 bucks all I'd expect is something to wear at a race to hopefully bump into someone else from the message board, not make a fashion statement.
Maybe I use tshirts differently than others, but Malmo you are taking this way too seriously.
By the way wejo, when are they going to ship, a couple weeks?

You're wrong all over the place. I am not talking about reproducing artwork--that would be just as dumb as painting a sheet of sandpaper on the chest. I'm talking about doing the LRC logo in the artistic style of great artists.
That quote is not Rono's. Rono is repeating something that I told him.
I like the comic book Benday dots idea. Add another WSJ hedcut style redo of the logo.
I like the quote anyways.
Why not keep one shirt with a meme, but have another without, and more professional --- Celebrating the useful running knowledge here.

You're welcome. Henry was used to having so many hustlers and sleaze bags trying to get a piece of him he liked it when I told him that we were just two guys who liked to feel the wind in our faces.

That famous artist thing has been done. How about some straight-up graphic design?
Shirts have to get shipped back from Boston and then they will go out so I anticipate next week.

Finally, I get to correct Malmo! I have enjoyed being corrected by you over the years and look forward to a long and fruitful discussion.
You can't say "there's no copyright for dead artists." IP rights (including TM and patent) are intangible property rights just like interests in land, stocks, bank accounts, whatever. They'll pass on to their creator or owner's heirs just like his or her other property would. They'll eventually expire and enter the public domain, but not just because their creator is dead.
I feel like you know this, though. Maybe I'm not hearing you right.
I've heard your Stentorian voice Rund al'Thor. Yes, I understand a little teeny bit about dead artists rights, and because of my law degree at Holiday Inn Express I should have given the correct answer "it depends". As a generalization copyrights of long dead artists have expired. But the issue of copyrights is a sideshow here. I was never talking about reproducing whole artwork, I was talking about mimicking the artistic styles of famous artists and employing those elements into dressing up the Letsrun logo.
Quite right. You can never go wrong with "it depends". I knew the broader point was that you could do a logo in the style of famous works, whether they're under copyright or not, Just look at how Google does their main page when they have a stylized logo.
Now if we could figure out if the damned airplane on a treadmill will take off we'll be getting somewhere.
