Have an athlete who has been diagnosed by a Dr, doctor says he's allowed to run... he ran the second fastest 5k of his life on Saturday... anyone have opinions... I'm just trying to hear what others have done...

Mono effects everyone differently, and assuming he's around the average for how it will affect him, he will basically be done for the season.
He can still run, but he'll begin to slow his pace and need lower intensity. Recovery is a bitch and takes insanely long when you have mono. A hard workout (which may not have even been that hard pre-mono) can leave your legs sore for 3-4 days.
He can still run in races, and probably run everyday, but his times will slow down, and there's nothing he can really do. It's so painful to see. I guarantee he wont' PR for the rest of the season.
It normally takes around 4-6 weeks to get rid of mono, but with running, and the toll it takes on your immune system, it typically takes longer. I've yet to see a runner get rid of the disease within 3 months... I'm not saying you can't, I'm just saying I've yet to see it.
Now, everything I posted is if he has a moderate to severe case of the disease. It affects everyone differently. Some people have far fewer symptoms, and it hardly affects them. If this is the case, you're in luck!
Hope the best. Mono sucks. I'm sorry.

Read this.
Magness details exactly what he did to help Ryan Dohner go from Mono to State Champ and sub-9 in 6 weeks or so:

Interesting read.
Problem here is, Dohner got mono in JANUARY. And states are in the later half of May. There was a full 5 months before he originally got the disease, and states. It wasn't as if he got it 1 month before states, such as the original poster's situation.
he ran 17:15 this weekend for 5k he's only and junior... we're trying to hold him back on workouts and on mileage days right now, but he wants to keep going and stick with the plan... he's handling it like a champ, but i just hope that he can hang on and run well in 4 weeks... thanks for the responses!
I'll just toss this out. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with chronic Epstein Barr Virus, which is the underlying cause of mono, chronic fatigue syndrome, and some other diseases.
After my doc told me there was no cure, I searched for alternative treatments and found Lauricidin at the website of the same name.
I took it and felt better in a week. I'd been having recurrences every six months or so for a couple of years. It's been two years, and I've not had a recurrence since starting the Lauricidin.
Everyone is different, but it would be worth a try, in my opinion.

My mistake. It was 7 weeks from diagnosis in February to sub 9 at Tx Relays.
It was a month from diagnosis to 9:12.
So I would say that's pretty relevant to the original poster.
