Other than Mo and Lagat, are there any 5k medal threats at the WC/OC level not in this race?
And, yes, I still consider Lagat a medal threat in the 5k.

"Can Galen Rupp Get the American Record?"
It seems years of training have built to this point; the purpose of not running the USA 5k Champs was to try and get the AR while Rupp is at this fitness level, no?
If that is the case, then possibly there are some under-the-table "incentive payouts" being offered, maybe to more than one in that field, to take this race out HARD, WIRE-TO-WIRE(!), in order to increase the chances of Rupp getting paced-out to the AR, yes?
I hope I'm wrong, but does anyone else feel a Solinsky-type AR upset scenario by True this time? Rupp goes under the AR, but gets beaten to it by True? No one thought Solinsky would beat Rupp in his 10,000 AR attempt a few years ago.

This one is a tougher AR - I'll be seriously impressed if True and Rupp both get it.
IF the pace is strong, then Rupp has no excuse and he should get the AR. I think he'll get it. Not sure if he'll win, but I'll predict 12:53.

What a great name for a runner "Kangogo"!!!!!
That Cornelius sure can go go!!!
Oh Rupp can't get the AR if True is ahead of him!
The IAAF scoring tables equate Rupp's 7:30.16 3000m to a 12:52.3 5000m.
Even if you debate the tables, Rupp is supposed to get better as the distance gets longer.
So he should be right there for the record. And Nike and Salazar should realize the pacers can't be taken for granted after what happened in Oslo.
I'm calling it now, 12:49.73 for Rupp.

I'm interested to see what kind of race and what time Lawi Lalang runs. Is he sponsored does anyone know? Nike, Adidas?
I will cut off my own nut sak with a kite string if Lawi beats Rupp.
....However, I would love to see it happen.
If he goes in with a pusillanimous attitude he won't, with a positive attitude he will.

The difference between Meb's old 10000m AR (before Solinksy) and the Lagat's current 5000m AR is that one is world class and the other is not. Keflezighi ran that time back in 2001 and it was still a way's off of the old world record. Additionally, it wasn't really considered a threatening time then and definitely was not one in 2010. Lagat's AR was not only a very convincing time then, but he proceeded to get Silver in the WC and the time it still is a world class time to hit.
While I wouldn't be surprised if True beats Rupp, I wouldn't be surprised if Rupp breaks the AR on Saturday instead. However, I would be very surprised if both of these scenarios happened. considering it would require Ben to potentially run sub 12:50.
Race will prob be sit and kick 13:00 range again. No record or exciting race.
I could very well be in the dark on this.
But why is Rupp entered in this race? By my rough estimate his twins are due right about race time.
It seems to me he would stay around Portland. Keep up his training until after his kids are born. Then do a few DL races in August and September.
Will you come back here after the race and talk about how silly and biased you are?
I think of he does get the AR he'll be very close to it. Definitely arching the race if it's available for free streaming.
It's a great field. Koech is missing, no Gebremeskel, but no matter. I pick Merga for the win (that was a joke, kids.)
The faster the pace, the better for Rupp in terms of who can kick off a tough slog. Given a good pace, Rupp is ready for the AR.
If you look at Bekele and Geb's great runs over 5000, note how they are willing to go for it when the pacemakers wilt. I don't know if Galen is a guy who can or will do this type of thing. Comes a time where a guy has to try.
The difference is that Bekele and Geb had no competition for the most part in their record runs. This year's Paris race is very competitive.
I'm not saying Rupp is WR ready at all, just looking at scenarios for an AR run for him. Yes, I forgot to mention Komen...
Except for one or two races each year, these things tend to turn into kicker's races with the winner in the low 13's. We saw Rupp do pretty darn good in just such a race on his last outing over 5.
rupp is in waaaaayyyyy better than 13 flat 5k shape.
he's good for a 350 mile at least with simultaneous 26:30 10k ability. you try to do that.
so an intermediate 5k of 12:50 or better is a no brainer.
just need the right race and the A game.
remember that everyone not named el-g, moe, geb, or bekele have maybe a 40% chance of delivering their best on a given day.
even when they are in great shape.
Hey in case you haven't noticed Rupp is only in 26:44 10k shape as evidenced by his 26:44 10k which he ran all-out.
True will not beat Rupp and Rupp will not beat Ndiku. Anyone not blinded by fanboyism can see this.
someone had to do it. wrote:

Rupp will decide that being with his wife the last few weeks before the birth of their future running twins is much more important than a race in Paris.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
