I think the issue was the slow (relative) first 1000m
Shoulda took the lead way sooner. He just didn't have the speed.
He was in the lead at the bell, and the guy that jumped in front with 250m to go, appeared to slow down dramatically, where Rupp was boxed, and had to slow to try and get around on the turn.
Rupp still beat Ndiku and Longowisa...as well a bunch of other "darlings" of the world circuit 5,000

This was a bit unfortunate, but he could have avoided it by going harder down the backstretch or staying off the rail. It seems to me that Galen was determined to ride the rail for quite a bit of this race and ended up needing to change gears frequently as people would pass him and then slow down. My overall impression is that Galen demonstrated amazing patience, maybe just too much patience.
amazing, Soi first and so far only runner sub-13 this year.
Where are Merga and Gebrehiwet(sp?)?

In the post race snippets, they had a slow-mo where of an african wagging his finger at another beside him, while the announcers were commenting on their controlling the race. I wonder at what point in the race that clip was recorded. Would be nice to review that last 400m when Rupp was overtaken, and then boxed while the pace slowed. Nonetheless, Rupp probably needed to be well ahead in pace at that point if he was to get the AR. Hard to thinking that boxing-tactic cost him seven seconds.

This. He lost momentum here. He was moving as fast as anyone else the last 60m, but could not make up what he'd lost on the last turn.
that really sucks
Rupp was going hard down the backstretch, accelerating when he overtook Lalang at the bell; they jumped him then slowed down at the end of the backstretch. And if Rupp stays off the rail, then they overtake him on the inside.
The TV coverage missed at least half of the race, but I agree with you with the portion I saw; it wasn't a flat-out even-paced burner good for chasing the AR. Maybe he needs to just go out and try and time trial the splits regardless of where that puts him, but he needs fast pacers to stretch it out so that he still gets a rail position, while blowing thru the splits. Maybe that is not possible in these DL races?
Agreed. Rupp beat some great runners. 13 is a very fast 5K time. The race just didn't go his way for an AR attempt. He was in it the whole way and just didn't finish as well as the others. At Rupp's level small differences make for losses. He's a great runner.

It didn't go his way because he made no attempt to make it go his way. You don't run 12:53 by spending half the race in 8th place when the pacers are hitting splits for 13:00.
It may have cost him the win. Not seven seconds.

I get so caught up in the Rupp-bashing that I forget that 13:00 and 4th is actually a really respectable performance given how the race played out. This is really sensible.
Seems like the Oregon project should hire Sambu to pace Rupp because he has been screwed in these last 2 5k's. I think Rupp needs to be put into an insanely fast pace where people are falling off or barely hanging on in order to break the American record.
Are you Serious! I am. wrote:

That was the point I was trying to make. They jumped him, slowed him down, and cost him the win; and even if they had not slowed him down, he was outside of getting the AR at that point.
Thanks. I could never bring myself to be critical of anybody who can run 5K in 13 minutes. Sadly, sensible posts are usually attacked on Letsrun. Part of my message is that at Rupp's level not feeling quite ready, or not getting some pacing help can ruin a record attempt. It doesn't take much at the top level to lose. Medals are won and lost by a second or two. Rupp will get the AR. Just a matter of the right race, and feeling good.

Every race with a bunch of great runners has some of them crashing an burning. Then idiots like you look up the crashed and burned and say, "Oh look, (fill in name of favorite American runner) beat Crash and Burn 1 and Crash and Burn 2."
Seriously, how idiotic can you get?
I think people are losing sight of the fact that Rupp is perforiming much better this year in his second best event. I too would like to see a faster race. Rupp expected the pacers to go 7:42 and they were 11 seconds off. If they had, things could have been a lot different. I wonder how many more chances he will get this year considering he is having kids very soon.
True may have peaked earlier this year,
