Being Asian, I ran in college at the DI level. I don't konw what kind if Asian you are - but from the sounds of it, Indian. I still run today - although not fast. I was fortunate to have a super supportive family, wife.
I know of a few others but all of them are just hobby-joggers. It's a rare sight - but we're out there.
Coming from an Asian family - my thoughts on this:
1. Running/sports are seen as childhood play. Not something adults should be devoting their lives to. Of course - to be decent at running we need to devote quite a bit of time.
2. The professions Asians typically choose out of college don't lend to optimal training. Most of my cousins are in the medical field (that stereotype holds true on my side).
3. There is very little family support - especially if the Asian runner marries another Asian. The likelihood that the Asian spouse has any interest in running is slim. The spouse will want to be active in their culture - which, itself, is not runner-friendly. This includes eating spicy food, the religious rituals (if you're muslim you have Ramadan), hanging out with a usually large family..seemingly all the time.
4. External familial pressure. When hanging out at family functions - the conversations are typically dominated by career, education, and/or religion. Running is not high on the totem pole of respect. And having/gaining respect is amongst the larger/extended family is important. I can't stress the last point enough.
Of course not every family is like this - but there are definitely cultural norms that aren't runner-friendly. I would personally love to see more Indians/Asians kicking butt at the elite level - esp representing their Asian countries.
